Delightful Dordogne
The town of Brantôme, set in the lush green hills of the northern Dordogne, represents what is for many, the ideal French town. Lying beside the wide and tranquil waters of the River Dronne, Brantôme’s elegant and attractive architecture graces the skyline as you gaze up towards the thickly wooded backdrop of hills from the riverside. Romantic, and as rich in history as it is in natural beauty, Brantôme is truly one of the Dordogne’s greatest treasures.
|
A tour of the town…
There is much worth seeing in Brantôme, and you would be well advised to take a good look around the town if you haven’t visited before. Places of interest include the imposing Benedictine Abbey, the atmospheric cloisters, the Medici Fountain, the Renaissance Pavilion with its distinctive round towers, and the grottos on the outskirts of the town which contain fascinating vestiges of a former monastery. There are elegant walled Italianate gardens, riverside churches and a lovely bridge, the Pont Goudé, which was constructed in 1538 by Pierre de Mareil. Brantome’s bell tower is thought to be one of the oldest in France, and certainly is an awe-inspiring sight.
|
More modern pleasures
Brantôme, for all its history and culture, contains many more modern delights and offers plenty of good shops, bars and restaurants. The riverside cafés are ever popular, combining good French food and drink with an extremely picturesque setting. There is a weekly market, for that unmissable and essentially French experience, and all the usual amenities such as banks, schools, garages and supermarkets.
|
Activities available
The river is ideal for canoeing, and the banks provide some beautiful riverside walks. Nearby you can access a good selection of sports, with horse-riding and cycling among the more popular.
|
How to get there
The airports of Bergerac (Ryanair, flybe), Limoges (Ryanair, flybe) and Bordeaux (British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus, easyJet) are all near enough to be realistic arrival points. And as they are served by various airlines including the budget options, you don’t have to spend a fortune on travel. It is also feasible to travel by super fast TGV to Angoulême.
|
Property prices and availability in and around Brantôme
The Dordogne has experienced considerable price rises in recent years due to its massive popularity with the foreign market. The northern Dordogne, however, which is where Brantôme is situated, can often prove to yield some bargains still, and is certainly a good place for those seeking country property to renovate.
