Lalinde in delightful Dordogne
The bastide town of Lalinde is found in the south of the Dordogne department of south-west France. The Dordogne is often referred to as being "popular" and "beloved of the English", and if this puts you off, then so be it... but there is a very valid reason why the area is so popular with the English… they know a good thing when they see one! Lalinde is a perfect example of everything the British love about the Dordogne. Situated on the picturesque River Dordogne, this old walled bastide town is surrounded by gorgeous and dramatic scenery that could have come from a film set. Indeed, many quintessentially "French" films are shot around here.

Lalinde – a bastide town
Picture an ideal old French town and you are probably conjuring up an image of a town that looks and acts very like Lalinde. Lalinde is an old walled town, built to the defensive and incidentally, very attractive, bastide principle of grid patterned streets and centrally located squares. Interestingly, Lalinde was the first "English" bastide to be built in France, under Henry III Plantagenet in the 13th century. So there is a precedent for the popularity of the town with the English after all!

Thursday is market day in Lalinde
Lalinde holds its traditional street market every Thursday, and this is a colourful and lively affair, every week, come rain or shine.

Shopping and dining
Shopping and dining are two pastimes that are extra delightful when performed in France, and never more so than in Lalinde, where there is access to wonderful shopping, with modern supermarkets and traditional French shops such as chocolateries and patisseries too. Here you can also find a great selection of excellent restaurants where you can sample the famous rich cuisine of which this region is so justly proud. Try the very traditional fare and atmosphere on offer in restaurant La Forge, perhaps, or enjoy the dramatic setting of the Château Lalinde.

Out and about
Lalinde, with its rural and riverside setting, is perfect for many outdoor activities such as canoeing or kayaking, swimming, walking, horse-riding and cycling. The town is also well placed for days out, with lots of beautiful and interesting places to visit. Sarlat la Canéda is one definitely worth heading for, as this is considered to be the best preserved mediaeval town in France. Bergerac is another wonderful town and only a short drive away from Lalinde. Wine lovers can visit the great vineyards of Bergerac and, a little further afield but still perfectly accessible, the vineyards of Bordeaux.
|
How to get there
It is easy to get to Lalinde from the UK. Bergerac airport is served by Ryanair and flybe, and has regular direct flights from the UK. Rail travel is another possibility as the town has a railway station from which you can find links to the TGV stop at Libourne. The TGV takes about four hours from Paris to Libourne. If you are driving from Paris, head for Bordeaux and then Bergerac, and you will find the town on the D8.

Property prices and availability in and around Lalinde
The Dordogne does tend to have higher property prices than less popular areas of France, but the upside to this is that property should hold its value well and is also likely to be easy to rent out for a good return should you wish to do this. Types of property in and near Lalinde vary from tumbledown barns for restoration through to magnificent country houses and chateaux. Just choose your price bracket!
