Monpazier – the best preserved bastide in France?
The town of Monpazier in the Dordogne department of south-west France is reported to be the best, or at least, one of the best preserved bastide towns in the country. With no less than 30 of its buildings designated as world heritage sites, its perfect bastide layout and central square, its olde worlde unspoiled atmosphere and its tiny population of only 500 souls, Monpazier is a delight to see, and perhaps even more of a delight in which to live.

Traditional market in Monpazier
Thursday is market day in Monpazier, and everything else stops to allow this great French tradition to take its place in the town. Anyone who loves France has a fondness for its markets, which are as much a way of French life as coffee and croissants.
|
Shops and town life...
There are some good shops in the little town, and one of particular note is the fabric shop which sells particularly specialist Provençal fabrics. There are a few charming cafés where you can enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine and relax while the rest of the world goes about its business all around you. For a relatively small town it has a great choice of really good restaurants, with plenty of dining options to suit all tastes and ages. Most basic amenities are on hand within the town itself, but if you do need a larger town it is easy to access the very lovely town of Bergerac, which will be able to provide anything you could think of!

Leisures and pleasures
Monpazier is situated in one of the loveliest natural areas of France, so there is no shortage of things to do in the region. Sporty types can find horse-riding, tennis, petanque, hiking, cycling, golf and many other activities within easy reach of the town. The less sporty can also find plenty to occupy themselves in their free time, as the Dordogne is a wonderful department, blessed by some of the prettiest towns and landscapes in France. Spend a day or two exploring the area and you will understand why the Dordogne is one of France's most popular departments for British property seekers.
|
How to get there
Fly to Bordeaux, Bergerac or Toulouse with a good choice of airline and departure points from around the UK. Bordeaux is served by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet; Bergerac by flybe and Ryanair; and Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi and Jet2. Train travel is another good choice, with TGV links from Paris to Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Property prices and availability in and around Monpazier
The Dordogne property market has become a real hotspot in recent years, so prices in a desirable location such as this pretty bastide town can tend to be on the high side, especially compared with, for example, the Limousin. It seems likely, however, that property in or near Monpazier will always be a good investment as the town maintains its popularity with the holiday trade as well as with permanent home buyers.
