The dominating feature of Salignac Eyvigues is the 12th century castle that sits on a high point above the town, but Salignac has many other lovely features too. The Eyrignac Manor Gardens are quite superb, offering formally laid out Renaissance gardens, rare orchids, an original pavilion and fountains, fantastic topiary and statues. The town's location, in the Dordogne, offers the chance to enjoy all the attractions of one of France's most delightful and best loved departments.
Salignac has a good range of shops and services, making everyday life simple and pleasant. A small supermarket caters for all basic needs, while other shops include butchers, bakers, hairdressers and craft shops. Farmer's markets are held here, offering the opportunity to purchase the best of fresh, local produce, with popular products being Foie Gras and a selection of local cheeses. Salignac is also known for its artisanal crafts.
Of the heritage, don't miss the castle (you can't - it really is a very visible and impressive feature!) and the fabulous gardens of the Eyrignac Manor. Also of note are the 13th century monastery, a Gothic church, the old market hall and an elm tree that has been around for at least two centuries. The village streets and houses are also part of its heritage and quite beautiful in their soft, sand-coloured stone and traditional form. Salignac can also provide laid back entertainment in the form of bars, restaurants and festivals.
The Dordogne is one of France's most popular departments, especially with British people, and there is no shortage of things to see and do which can be easily accessed from a base in Salignac Eyvigues. The stunning town of Sarlat la Canèda is almost on the doorstep, then there are pre-historic caves to visit, children's attractions such as zoos and aqua parks and much, much more. Enjoy a refreshing swim in a pretty lake or river, pick up a rod and a permit from a local tabac and go fishing, enjoy the countryside from the saddle of a horse or a bicycle, or simply put on some comfy shoes and discover the beauty of the Dordogne on foot.
To get to the region by air you can fly to Brive Vallée de la Dordogne Airport, Bergerac, Limoges or Bordeaux, all direct from the UK with a variety of airlines. TGV trains run to most of these cities also, while drivers should follow the A20 auto route, finding the village on the D60.
The Dordogne is often thought of as an expensive department, such has been its popularity with overseas house buyers. However, although to an extent this is still true, sellers have become more realistic in recent times, and in lesser known villages such as this one, property can be surprisingly reasonable.
