Trémolat – a peaceful Perigourdan village
Trémolat is a peaceful and charming village that is typical of its area, that of the Perigord Noir, or Black Perigord, in south-west France. The village lies close to the pre-historic cave of Bara-Bahau and the amazing stalactites of the Gouffre de Proumeyssac, and this creates a good deal of tourist interest in the area. The village lies on a bend of the Dordogne River, amid the loveliest of landscapes, with fertile vineyards, deep forests, sparkling rivers and rolling hills providing a pleasing backdrop.

Two churches
Trémolat has two interesting 12th century churches, one of which (St Nicholas's Church) stands where an earlier 9th century church once stood, alongside the remains of a monastery. You can still see the outline of the 12th century monastery, and there is enough of a footprint left to allow speculation on how life once was lived here. St Hilaire's Church meanwhile, was built at a similar time but renovated in the 1950's, and is also worth a look.

Shops and services
When it comes to shops and services, Trémolat lacks for nothing. There are butchers, bakers, greengrocers, and a Tuesday market too, for those who prefer to shop in the traditional style. There are a good number of skilled craftspeople on hand to help you too, as Trémolat offers bricklayers, plumbers, hairdressers, tilers, mechanics and more!

Great food and wine
The Dordogne offers such a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some of the most famous and celebrated wines and foods in the country, that it would be almost a tragedy if a village such as Trémolat did not promise a range of restaurants and bars in which to enjoy these local specialities. But don't worry, Trémolat has restaurants, farm shops, bars and wine caves where all this and more is on offer for you. And if traditional French fare is a little rich for your taste there is always the excellent pizzeria for a change!

Trémolat's nautical lake
Trémolat has a superb nautical sports lake, where many major international sporting events are held (the lake is a Mecca for canoeists and kayakers) and where activities take place all the time. It is also where the traditional boats, known as the Gabares, can be seen. These Gabares used to sail up and down the River Dordogne, carrying goods for sale from their place of origin to their buyers. Eventually this river transport system was ousted by the arrival of the railways, but the Gabares are a fascinating reminder of these gentler times.

Additional sports on offer
Trémolat sees itself as a "village for athletes", so as you can imagine there are plenty of opportunities to be active. As well as the nautical lake activities there are other sports available locally including tennis, pony trekking, fishing, crazy golf and water skiing.

The Trémolat Loop
There is a special treat in store for walkers and cyclists here too. The Trémolat Loop, the high trail above the river valley that leads along the road called the Route de Cingle, has some of the most spectacular views in France. Don't forget to take a camera.

How to get there
There are airports at Bergerac and Bordeaux which offer a selection of airlines and destination points from the UK, and which mean that getting to Trémolat by air is simple and inexpensive. Bergerac is served by flybe and Ryanair, and Bordeaux by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus, easyJet and flybe. Rail travel is also a good choice, with the TGV stopping at Libourne (in about four hours) from where you can take a local service to Trémolat itself. By road from Paris, follow the A20 auto route then the A21 in the direction of Perigueux. Trémolat lies near the D29.

Property prices and availability in and around Trémolat
The Dordogne has become extremely popular with foreign buyers, and the predictable result is that prices have risen considerably in recent years. The upside is that if you do buy a property in a picturesque and desirable spot such as Trémolat, it is likely to prove a good investment with properties holding their values well, and holiday letting providing a possibility to bring in some extra cash.
