Arcachon – an interesting and stylish resort
The resort of Arcachon, located in the south-west of France, to the south of the Gironde estuary, is an interesting and very stylish seaside resort, long associated with beach and bathing holidays. The excellent climate and sea air are also said to be a cure for patients with chest problems, although these days the resort is less of a convalescence home and more of a vibrant water sports centre! France’s pretty and aptly named “Silver Coast” does indeed offer some beautiful fine sand beaches, and Arcachon is also famed for the largest sand dune in Europe, which is found close to the resort.

A town of four seasons
Arcachon is a town which is divided into four distinct quarters. These are named after the seasons, with the Summer City including the seafront and the beach casino, the Autumn City including the fishing port and the marina, the Winter City being set in the cool pine woods that back the resort, and the Spring City lying to the west of the Summer city, around the Pereire Park area. If you are seeking a truly elegant and exclusive residence, the Winter City may be the place to look, as here there are some really beautiful houses... but not for those on a budget!

Plenty to do in Arcachon
Developed as a seaside resort, Arcachon offers plenty to keep you occupied. The beaches are superb, with fine silver sands and safe warm seas, and the marina offers opportunities for sailing and other water sports. Arcachon has great shopping and even better restaurants, and don't forget that when in Arcachon you are in the oyster capital of France... or something akin to it... so do try these delicious shellfish which are farmed from the lagoon. Night life in Arcachon is more sophisticated than in many French resorts, so if you fancy trusting Lady Luck, why not visit the casino?

Arcachon’s sports facilities
If you are energetically inclined, but prefer to be on dry land, Arcachon can offer more than just water sports. Close to hand you will find an eighteen-hole golf course, a horse-riding centre, bicycle hire and tennis courts. There is also an amusement park not far from Arcachon which is guaranteed to keep the kids happy.

And for the wine buffs...
Arcachon may be most famous for sand and sand dunes, but it is also within one of the most renowned wine regions in the world, so wine buffs can have whale of a time visiting vineyards, tasting, tasting, tasting... and maybe buying the fantastic wines of Bordeaux.

How to get there
There are two airports close to Arcachon, these being Bordeaux (British Airways, flybe, bmibaby, Aer Lingus, easyJet) and Bergerac (flybe, Ryanair). And with this good selection of airlines, air travel costs can be kept low. Bordeaux has a TGV stop, meaning that train travel is fast and simple, as Eurostar will get you to Paris and with just one simple change will take you all the way to Bordeaux. From here you can easily access local services to Arcachon. Drivers should take the A10 auto route from Paris to Bordeaux.

Property prices and availability in and around Arcachon
The Atlantic coast, especially in this area, has long been a popular destination for holiday makers and second home seekers, so prices tend to be high. The rental possibilities are excellent though, so you can offset the initial cost of the property by renting it out when you are not using it. If you are seeking a permanent home and wish to be in the area but don't have too much money to spend, try looking a short way inland from Arcachon, where prices can be a little lower.
