Castillon la Bataille - a vibrant wine town
Castillon la Bataille is a vibrant wine town that lies on the banks of the Dordogne River in south-west France. Attractive and bustling, this little market town is typical of its area, with plenty of facilities and surrounded by the lovely vineyards that make this region world famous. Formerly called Castillon sur Dordogne, the name was changed in 1953 to commerate the battle fought on this site during the Hundred Years War, the Battle of Castillon.

Super for shops
If some French towns of character seem to lack modern conveniences, Castillon la Bataille is not one of them. The town offers no less than four supermarkets, a great selection of smaller shops (including a post office and a tourist office), and a huge range of wine caves and co-operatives. The Maison de Vin is exceptionally helpful, and will advise you on the best wine domains to visit and the best places to taste the local wines. It also offers general information about this most famous product of the region.

A picturesque setting
Castillon la Bataille is set in a lovely location, with the wide and beautiful River Dordogne flowing through. There are some vestiges of the mediaeval gates and walls to be found, although there is not as much remaining as one might hope to see in such an historic spot. Castillon is far from a disappointment though. It has a lovely atmosphere, especially on market days (Mondays) when the entire town seems to wake from its calm, rural mode and go into an excited overdrive, filling its streets with glorious colour, sounds and scents.

Enjoying yourself in Castillon la Bataille
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy your life in Castillon la Bataille. The little town is well equipped with restaurants, and there is no better place to spend a warm summer's evening than wandering along the very pretty waterfront, site of the ancient river port.

The Battle of Castillon
The other event that you should not miss is the re-enactment of the famous battle, the last great battle of the Hundred Years War, when the French finally put the English to rout at Castillon la Bataille (hence the name) back in 1453, on July 17th. As part of a two-week long festival that takes place every year in late July and early August, there is a spectacular light and sound re-enactment of the battle. Expect the town to be packed at this time, as people come from far and wide to enjoy the show.

Out and about
There is no end of places that you can visit in the region, and "doing the vineyards" has to figure highly on the list of things to do. If this palls, or you are not particularly interested in wine, don't worry as there are also some beautiful and historic sites to discover near Castillon. The UNESCO World heritage Site of Saint Emilion is very near, and if you have a little more time to spare, the lovely town of Mont de Marsan is only a relatively short drive to the south.

How to get there
Bordeaux airport is served by several airlines, including British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus, easyJet and flybe. Or if you prefer the train, you can take the TGV from Paris and arrive in Bordeaux in around three hours after a swift and enjoyable journey. If driving to Castillon you will find the town from the D17.

Property prices and availability in and around Castillon la Bataille
The Gironde area is highly sought after, and an affluent area such as this, close to Bordeaux, is unlikely to offer the lowest prices in France when it comes to property. Property in and close to Castillon, though, holds its price and sells well, so once you have become a property owner here you should find you have a great investment. It is still possible to find properties for renovation and further development around the town, so if this is your dream, don't miss these opportunities when they crop up.
