Hagetmau – in the middle of a beech forest...
The town of Hagetmau lies in the south-west of France, in the Landes department of Aquitaine, close to the Pyrénéan Mountains and the Basque coast. The name of Hagetmau means, literally translated from the original Gascon tongue, "in the middle of a beech forest", and it is from this proliferation of naturally available wood that the chief industry of the town, the construction of fine wooden furniture, sprung. Much of the Landes department is forested, with a variety of trees but including much pine.

Attractive town in good location
The town is attractively placed, being set on a high point of land with excellent views, and is located in a handy part of the region for accessing not only airports for flights to and from the UK, but also for visiting the surf resorts of Biarritz and the Basque coast, and for trips across the border into Spain, where there is some excellent and very cheap shopping to be had in the border town of Irun.

Dining out

Bloodless bullfights
If you are seeking an unusual form of entertainment you can find it in this area, as the special kind of (humane) bullfighting known as "Cours Landaise" takes place in many towns close to Hagetmau. In this genre of the sport, unlike that practiced so controversially in Spain, the bulls live to fight another day and it is the unarmed men who are most at risk.

Property prices and availability in and around Hagetmau
Property in the Landes is usually quite reasonably priced, as long as you keep away from the coast where the prices rise steeply as always. Hagetmau represents a good opportunity to purchase property in south-west France while prices are still uninflated by over popularity.
