Duras - a town of character
The little town of Duras, found nestling among the vineyards and sunflowers of south-west France in the Lot-et-Garonne department, is a delightful gem of a town, complete as it is with a fabulous chateau and an authentic framer's market held every Monday in the central square. Duras has a special magic, a magic formed from, perhaps, a mixture of its history, heritage, warmth of welcome and a connection to the land that surround this pretty town.
|
Duras's Farmer's Market
Every Monday morning an event takes place in the square and streets of Duras that you really should not miss. The Farmer's Market attracts sellers from farms around the area, as well as buyers from much further afield, all keen to sample the excellent local produce, brought fresh to town. If you are hoping to soak up some truly French country character too, this is really the place to find it.

Restaurants and cafés in Duras
It may not be a particularly large town, but Duras is able to welcome you with a small and excellent selection of pretty pavement cafés and restaurants, as well as a good few useful shops, banks and other amenities. Don't forget to try the exceptional local wine, Côte de Duras, which is produced in tiny quantities but which is a real treat for the connoisseur.

Out and about
Duras lies in an area that is not only of outstanding natural beauty, but is also rich in history and heritage. There are many places of interest to visit, and plenty of possibilities for sports and leisure activities. Nearby you can play the quintessentially French game of petanque, go horse-riding in the lovely countryside, walk the randonées and vineyard paths, cycle, play golf or swim and fish in the lakes.

How to get there
Fly to Bordeaux, Bergerac or Toulouse with a good choice of airline and departure points from around the UK. Bordeaux is served by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet; Bergerac by flybe and Ryanair; and Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi and Jet2. Train travel is another possibility, with TGV links from Paris to Bordeaux and Toulouse.

Property prices and availability in and around Duras
The department of Lot-et-Garonne is not one of France's cheapest, as it lies in a great location between Toulouse and Bordeaux, making both cities easily accessible and keeping prices high. However, it does not suffer from the rush of popularity with British buyers that affected the Dordogne, so you may well find that the property you are seeking is more reasonably priced here than just to the north.
