Marmande, a market town that lies in the south-west of France in the north-west corner of Lot-et-Garonne, is one of the largest of the distinctively designed bastide towns that proliferate in this region. Said to have been founded by Richard the Lionheart on the site of an ancient settlement, Marmande is best known today for its superb variety of tomatoes, in which there is an important trade. The town is built on the usual grid pattern around a central arcaded square, where you will find markets and some attractive shops and cafés.
Marmande is not only famous for its tomatoes, however, as the town possesses a very beautiful cathedral which is worth visiting the town to see. The cathedral, with its interesting Gothic architectural features, also has some delightfully pretty gardens, perfect for a stroll in the sunshine after the shaded coolness of the interior. Meanwhile the town has a couple of cinemas and a museum as well, so there is plenty to do even if the sun doesn't shine for once.
Marmande is renowned for its excellent markets, of which there are a few each week. The best is reputed to be the Saturday morning market. The town also hosts antiques markets, so if this is your bag it is definitely the right place for you. There are lots of Broccante shops near the town too, so Lovejoy eat your heart out!
It isn't all the old stuff in Marmande, though, as the town is more than up to the task of providing modern essentials and pleasures too. There are supermarkets, a great array of shops, restaurants, wine caves, banks, schools and health services... everything, in fact, that you are likely to need!
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the sporting scene in and around Marmande. There are a lot of sports clubs based in the town, and locally available also are golf, tennis, swimming, walking and cycling.
Marmande is within easy reach of Bordeaux, Bergerac and even Toulouse, so there is a good choice of possibilities for air travel. Bordeaux is served by British Airways, bmibaby, Aer Lingus and easyJet; Bergerac by flybe and Ryanair; and Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi and Jet2. Train travel is also quite straightforward as there is a station in the town, and TGV stops at Toulouse and Bordeaux.
South-west France is a great place to buy property. Prices are not as high as in certain parts of the country (as long as you aren't looking to purchase in the fashionable areas of the big cities), and there is a good chance that you will find a real bargain in or around a town like Marmande. There are all kinds of properties available, with town houses, country houses and restoration projects all featuring.
