Anglet – the best of Basque
Anglet, which is located on France's south-west coast close to the Spanish border, offers a true Basque culture mixed with a modern take on life. The town has its own identity, yet also plays the role of suburb to both Biarritz and Bayonne, as it lies between the two great old cities. From the family friendly Chambre d'Amour to the state of the art leisure facilities of the country club-styled Chiberta area, Anglet functions well as holiday resort and gains much of its income from this. There is also a strong commercial centre.

Original charm
Although Anglet is not, by and large, an old town, it does offer some original Basque charm in its old heart. There is an attractive and peaceful atmosphere here, with the Mairie building and the church gazing out onto a pedestrianised main square, and a network of attractive little cobbled streets calling to mind days gone by. Near the old centre there is a large commercial area, where you can find supermarkets and other large shops catering to all your needs.

Family Friendly
The best place to head for if you have children in tow, or if you prefer a small and friendly atmosphere, is the Chambre d'Amour area. Here you will find exceptional sandy beaches, welcoming cafés and bars, play areas for children and great waves for surfers, so the teens will be happy too! There are numerous small hotels and B&B establishments here, and the area is popular with holiday makers for much of the year.

State of the art leisure...
If you are seeking a luxury holiday or even a luxurious permanent lifestyle, then look no further than the Chiberta area of Anglet. Here you will lack for nothing, as this country club-style resort offers everything from golf to ice skating, with tennis, horse-riding, swimming, surfing, and even seawater therapy treatments at your disposal! Surfing at Anglet
You cannot go to this part of the Basque coast and miss the fact that surfing is immensely popular here these days. With eleven beaches and a surf school of its own, Anglet is right in the middle of the surfing culture, and hosts many competitions throughout the season. Less well known than Biarritz, the town and its beaches nevertheless have many of the same advantages and provide excellent facilities.

The Basque cuisine is reputedly one of the best in the world, and Anglet offers plenty of opportunities to sample this in its excellent restaurants and specialist food shops. If you enjoy spicy, rich flavours with an unusual twist, then don't miss out. The cuisine here is quite unlike that found in much of France, and owes more to Spanish influences with its strong flavours and bright colours.

How to get there
To get to Anglet from the UK you can choose to fly to Biarritz or Pau, both of which are served by cut price airline Ryanair. If you prefer the train, you need to travel to Paris on the Eurostar and then change to a TGV which will take you all the way to Bayonne or Biarritz. Drivers should find the N10 road, heading for Biarritz. It is even possible to travel most of the way to Anglet by boat, as there is a ferry that runs from the UK to Santander and Bilbao.

Property prices and availability in and around Anglet
The southern Atlantic coast is a popular region of France, and this pushes house prices up. However, Anglet is a little less expensive than the better known towns of Biarritz and Bayonne, so it could be a good place to begin a search if you are hoping to make an investment or to find a property on a budget. Anglet can also be an ideal location for gîtes or holiday apartments, or perhaps a B&B business, as it is such a popular holiday area.
