Saint Pourcain sur Sioule – a wine town with charm and character
St Pourcain sur Sioule is an historic wine producing town that is located in central France, amidst the picturesque vineyards and beautiful rolling farmland of the department of Allier, in the Auvergne. A region often ignored, or at least, undiscovered, by foreign property seekers and holiday makers, the Allier has much to offer, and a visit to St Pourcain sur Sioule will show you exactly what they are all missing! The town is rooted in history and lies in a central location that offers, perhaps, what is the best of the north and the south, the east and the west. It is a marriage of all things quintessentially French, and has a distinctive charm and character all of its own.

Historical places to visit in the town
There are a number of historic monuments in St Pourcain, and these include the Church of Saint Croix, which has an unusual choir section, the Charles de Gaulle Bridge, a Benedictine priory, and a clock tower with an interesting raison d'ętre. It was built by the townsfolk as a statement of independence from the priory, with whom there was frequent conflict. The town also has many buildings of interest, with houses dating back to the Middle Ages. These are of typical mediaeval construction, using wattle and daub and ancient local stones. It is also still possible to see the traces of the old fortifications of the town.

Modern life
The town isn't only concerned with the past, rich and interesting though this may be. There is a strong current of modernity in the life of St Pourcain sur Sioule, fuelled by the affluence brought by the fine wines produced here and enjoyed by the rest of the world. There are recently created pedestrian areas, shops, services, bars and restaurants all for you to enjoy. The town is also on the button when it comes to sports, offering, either in town or in the vicinity, swimming, tennis, fishing, walking, cycling, horse-riding and golf. There are numerous cultural events held here too, with a wine festival held every August which is the signature event of the year.

Out and about
The famous spa town of Vichy is in the department, and is well worth a visit. You may also wish to take a trip to the towns of Montlucon, noted for its floral displays, and pretty Moulins. The wonderful Allier countryside is dotted with grand old chateaux, as well as many lovely lakes and rivers.

How to get there
The airport of Clermont Ferrand doesn't offer direct flights to the UK, so you will have to fly into Lyon, St Etienne, Tours or Limoges unless you are linking to Clermont Ferrand from another French airport such as Paris, which is, of course, another option. Lyon is served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi; St Etienne by Ryanair; Tours by Ryanair; and Limoges by Ryanair and flybe. The TGV travels from Paris to Lyon and Limoges, the nearest station to St Pourcain being at Saint Germain des Fosses, nineteen kilometres away. If you are travelling by car you should look for the A71 or the N7 auto routes. Saint Pourcain sur Sioule lies between these two major roads, at the junction of the N9 and D46.

Property prices and availability in and around Saint Pourcain sur Sioule
The region has yet to be discovered by anything like a significant number of British and other nationalities, so this could be a great chance to snap up a bargain before the boom arrives. There are some very reasonable properties on the market at the time of writing, with some excellent possibilities for finding interesting renovation projects.
