A town as pretty as its name
The town of Ambert, in the Auvergne region of southern central France, is as pretty as its very attractive name. Surrounded by a superb landscape, that of the Parc Régional Naturel Livradois-Forez, Ambert attracts walkers, nature lovers, cyclists and horse-riders who come to enjoy the unspoiled countryside and laid back ambience.
|
Snail shaped and mediaeval
Ambert has the distinction of being most unusually shaped, as its mediaeval streets wind their way around into the shape of a snail! The town is architecturally interesting for more than just this, however, as it also has a round Mairie, a building which had its origins as acorn exchange.
|
Thursday is market day
The old town has a market every Thursday, which is a sure promise of a real French experience, as all the locals, farmers and traders will gather together here and provide a vibrant picture of life in Ambert as it has been lived for centuries. That said, it is also a great opportunity to buy yourself some delicious fresh produce, to try local delicacies such as the delicious creamy blue cheese, Fourme D’Ambert, and to even treat yourself to something new to wear!
|
Shopping and dining
Ambert has plenty of good shops and services, and for those who enjoy dining out, there are also a good number of quality restaurants to try. A good tip when choosing a dish from the menu is to look for something including one of the local cheeses… this way you are guaranteed a truly unique and local taste! You will also please the proprietor, as the people of Ambert are very proud of these excellent cheeses.
|
Leisure lake
Ambert boasts a “Plan d’Eau”, a leisure lake in a pretty park where you can swim and sunbathe in safety. There are also boats and play equipment for children, and it makes a lovely way of whiling away a summers day. An aquatic park (a swimming complex including outdoor and indoor facilities) adds to the plethora of sporting possibilities in Ambert. Other things to do around and about include educational visits to interesting local enterprises such as bee keeping businesses, angora goat farms, cheese making centres and potteries. Also within reach is the volcano park of Clermont-Ferrand.
|
How to get there
To reach Ambert by air it is necessary to fly to St-Etienne or Limoges. St-Etienne is served by Ryanair while Limoges is served by both Ryanair and flybe. Rail travel will also get you to Lyon, from where you will need to take a local train or a hire car to your destination.
