Saint Rémy de Blot - what's in a name?
St Rémy de Blot is only small, with just under 200 inhabitants, but it's intriguing name ensures that once heard of, it will never be forgotten! The village is pretty and peaceful, and lies in the verdant and very fertile countryside of the Massif Central, where some of France's most famous cheeses are produced.
|
A rural idyll
If you are seeking absolute peace and quiet, and love the rural lifestyle, St Rémy de Blot could be the perfect hideaway for you. Set in a little known part of France, the village is tucked away amid the beautiful green farmlands of this region, the landscapes all around dotted with picturesque stone cottages and farmsteads. Life here is in tune with the seasons, and as this is the Massif Central, the seasons can be quite dramatic, with hot sun in summer and an often considerable fall of snow in the winter.
|
Nearby towns
If all this peace and quiet is making you feel a little isolated, don't worry, there are plenty of bigger towns and villages nearby to provide you with all the shops and services you may require. Clermont Ferrand itself is very accessible, and this city has everything you might hope for. A little nearer to home and useful for everyday requirements are the towns of Ambert and Issoire with plenty of shops and services and a good clutch of restaurants as well, so you have opportunities to really enjoy life.
|
Anyone for sports?
The region is great for sports enthusiasts with everything from lakes for fishing and swimming to skiing in the winter. Less sporty activities include a number of cultural events, fêtes and festivals, wine tasting and visits to cheese producers to learn about the land and the processes that produce some of the world's finest cheeses.
|
How to get there
There is an airport at Clermont Ferrand, but this does not have direct flights from the UK at the time of writing, so you could only use it to connect to local flights within France. Other airports you could use are Lyon, St Etienne or Limoges. Paris is another option, a little further away but has the advantage of easy links to services which will get you to Clermont Ferrand. Lyon is served by Air France, British Airways, easyJet and bmi; St Etienne by Ryanair; Limoges by Ryanair and flybe; and Paris by numerous airlines including Air France, British Airways, flybe, bmi, easyJet and Jet2. If travelling by road you will find St Rémy de Blot from the A71 auto route.
