For buying and selling property in Caurel
Caurel is a tiny village that lies in the north-west of France, in the popular department of Côtes d'Armor in Brittany. Caurel is small, having less than 400 residents, but its location, on the edge of the beautiful leisure lake of Guerlédan, Brittany's largest leisure lake, makes it stand out from the crowd and transforms this little village into one of Brittany's hidden gems.
Any jeweller knows that a precious gem will only look its best if it is placed in a perfect setting... and this is very much the case with Caurel. The village is very attractive, and typically Breton, having old stone cottages with slate roofs, colourful gardens and a tranquil yet friendly air. Its real glory, though, is in the setting.
Caurel lies on the edge of the big leisure lake of Guerlédan, where the natural beauty of the water and surroundings allies with the activities available. You can go sailing, swimming, canoeing, take out a pedalo or go fishing. You'll find beaches for sunbathing, and there are even some good restaurants there too! The whole combines to make Caurel a most desirable location in a very desirable department!
There may not be many large shops in Caurel, but there is one which will prove to be of great interest to British people considering buying property in the village. Chez Winnie is a combined French and British shop, offering the best of both countries' goods and produce in an intriguing Franglaise package. You won't have to forgo your British bacon for breakfast... but if the mood takes you, you can choose to spread your British marmalade on a deliciously crusty French baguette! Larger shops, supermarkets and other services can be found in the neighbouring towns and villages such as Mur de Bretagne and Corlay.
The Côtes d'Armor department is full of places to go and things to see and do, so you will never be bored if you have a base in Caurel. The coast is within easy reach, as it always is in Brittany, and there are plenty of lively resorts and beautiful beaches to enjoy. The mediaeval town of Dinan is a must see, and the lawyers town of Tréguier is another lovely place to visit. The countryside of Brittany, often overlooked in favour of the spectacular coast, is also very beautiful, and sprinkled with delightful hamlets and villages whose discovery is a pleasure in itself. Meanwhile shopping fans will enjoy the hypermarkets and bustling shops of the port towns.
If you prefer to fly, it is simple to take a flight directly from the UK to Dinard or Brest. Dinard is served by Aurigny and Ryanair, while Brest is served by flybe and Ryanair. Travelling by rail will take you to St Brieuc, while the excellent Brittany Ferries will get you to the port of St Malo, which is the nearest ferry port to Caurel. The nearest major road to Caurel is the N164.
Caurel offers some lovely properties priced surprisingly low for such a location. Brittany, and the Côtes d'Armor in particular, has become so popular with British buyers that in many places prices are high, so it makes sense to take advantage of the lower prices near Caurel before this too is discovered and property becomes too expensive!
