The little Gallo Roman town of Corseul in north-west France may seem unassuming today, but it was once an important Roman settlement. Set in the ever popular Côtes-d'Armor department, Corseul is an ideal base from which to enjoy the many splendours of this beautiful part of France. Coast and countryside are close at hand, as are many historic towns and picturesque villages.
Corseul possesses some fame thanks to its Gallo Roman heritage, and the excavations and remains are still visible today. The town also has a good little archaeological museum, providing a fascinating opportunity to trace the distant history of the town and the surrounding area where many important finds have been made.
The more modern side of life in Corseul offers a useful little supermarket for everyday provisions, two excellent bakeries, a pizzeria, a restaurant and several bars where you can sample the local specialities of food and drink. Nearby towns with greater choice of shops and eateries include Dinan and St Malo.
There is so much to keep you occupied in the region within reach of Corseul that you will never be bored, and that's a promise! Mediaeval Dinan, almost on the doorstep, is one of Brittany's premier attractions with its charming half-timbered houses, narrow, winding streets, ancient ramparts, bustling river port and multitude of intriguing shops and tempting restaurants. The ferry port and beach resort of St Malo is also near at hand, while smaller, less well known villages which ooze charm are everywhere.
The coast is just a short drive away, and has everything you could want whatever your tastes. Families can find safe beaches and friendly resorts while those who seek a little more sophistication or tranquillity can just choose their spot. Try Perros Guirec for a great family beach, St Malo for a lively ambience with lots to do and see, the fishing villages of Paimpol or Plouha for characterful fishing villages and lovely views, or the Ile de Bréhat for wild beauty and peace.
The nearest airport is that of Dinard (served by Ryanair and Aurigny), while the best ferry port to head for if you want to sail is St Malo. Road travellers will find Corseul on the D794, close to the N176 non toll motorway.
