The town of Gourin, which is located in central Brittany in the department of Morbihan, is known as the historic capital of the Montagnes Noires, or the Black Mountains. It is a town where traditions are taken seriously, perhaps even more so than in the rest of this very traditional and proud region, and many of the local people still choose to speak in the original Breton language rather than in the usual French.
Whether you like the modern way to shop, piling ready-prepared goods into a trolley in air-conditioned supermarkets or if you, like many of the residents of the town, are more of a traditionalist and prefer the leisurely basket in hand approach of the market goer, you will find that shopping in Gourin is a pleasant experience. There is a street market once a week in the town centre, and all other shops and facilities are on hand.
It's a good place to live or to holiday in, as being located centrally in the region you will find that all of Brittany is accessible to you from Gourin. The Atlantic Ocean is easily within reach, even though Gourin itself is located inland, and the neighbouring departments of Finistère, the Côtes d'Armor and Ille et Vilaine are all close enough to be explored with ease from a Gourin base.
There is always something to do in and close to Gourin, as well as plenty of leisure and sporting activities on hand to make sure you are never bored. The coast offers many beach and sea related sports such as sailing and sand yachting, and the countryside positively invites you to try a little pony trekking, cycling or walking.
You can fly to the airports of Lorient, Rennes, Brest or Dinard. Lorient is served by Aer Arann, Rennes by flybe and Aer Lingus, Brest by flybe and Ryanair, and Dinard by Aurigny and Ryanair. Aficionados of the ferry will be able to travel to the ports of Roscoff or St Malo, and continue by road. The town can be found close to the N164 and N165 roads. If travelling by rail, the TGV will take you to Guingamp from where you can link to a local service to get to Carhaix, some twelve kilometres from your destination.
Morbihan is often said to be one of the more expensive parts of Brittany. One reason for its popularity is that it benefits from better weather than the other departments as it is blessed by the Gulf Stream. Gourin offers a good variety of property, and is less expensive than the coastal towns so may prove worth investigating, especially if cost is an issue.
