Prosperous and stylish
The town of Châtillon-sur-Seine is situated in northern Burgundy, surrounded by hectares of woodland, rolling meadows and vineyards. The town is both prosperous and stylish, lying in the ‘fine wines and foods’ heartland of France, and even its name conjures up a sense of grandeur. There is an old quarter in the town, where the traditional steeply pitched red rooftops can be seen from the rocky outcrop above, and where the ruins of a castle can be found. Here there is also an old Romanesque church, and if you know where to look, it is possible to see a natural spring erupting from solid rock to join the infant Seine on its journey to become one of the great rivers of Europe.

Mystery and treasure!
If you love a good mystery, especially one with some beautiful and priceless treasure thrown in, then you need to pay a visit to Châtillon-sur-Seine. Just six kilometres outside the town, at a place called Vix, there is the tomb of a Celtic princess, dating back to the sixth century BC. Back in Châtillon itself there is a museum which houses some of the most beautiful and important pre Roman artefacts found in France, including jewellery found with the body of the princess, most notably a tiara which was actually found on her head! It is a complete mystery how the princess and her jewellery arrived at such a remote part of France.
