Decize – an island town
The town of Decize, which is located in eastern central France in the wine rich region of Burgundy, lies on a little island formed as the River Loire splits into two “arms”. This gives the pretty town an important economic situation, and also makes it one of Burgundy's most desirable locations!

History and nature
Decize is an ideal location for anyone who revels in history and nature. The town is ancient and has some delightful historic buildings to see. These include the vestiges of the ramparts and the chateau, the church and the Couvent des Minimes. There is an old abbey (La Charite) which was once an important resting place for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Another ancient and very lovely part of Decize is the famous avenue of the Promenade des Halles. This 985-metre long avenue is lined for its entire length with beautiful plane and lime trees, giving welcome shade to travellers.

Decize lies in splendid isolation
Decize is a very peaceful town, and all around you can enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of nature. Lying as it does between the two canals of the Loire, the Canal du Nivernais and the Canal Latèral à la Loire, Decize benefits from splendid isolation from the rest of the world, and has its own unique character. The canals are very popular with people on cruising holidays, and there is a wonderful joie de vivre created by this holiday feeling. The calm waters reflect the colours and shapes of the old town, with duplicate stone bridges, trees and gaily coloured boats shimmering in the sunshine.

Dining and wining
Decize has plenty to see and do, with a good collection of shops, including a small supermarket to make life nice and easy. And as this is Burgundy, where food and drink assume the utmost importance, there are also some excellent restaurants and wine caves where you can enjoy the region’s excellent products. The local Charolais beef is top of the list in most restaurants, and of course the wine list should be second to none.

Things to see and do
If you want to do more than just eat and drink (though I could be happily occupied doing nothing else!) you could do worse than pay a visit to the Stade Nautique, a fantastic water and activity centre with swimming, water slides, canoeing, pedaloes and mini golf. The area is also a paradise for fishermen, and for the less sportily inclined, it is always a pleasure to hire a boat and drift lazily down the canal taking in the ever changing landscapes of woods and pastures along the way. For a complete change of pace, don't forget that Magny Cours, the Formula One racetrack is close by... so if there is a meeting on while you are there you can really get a slice of the action!

How to get there
To get to Decize by air it is best to fly to either Lyon or Paris (Orly and Charles de Gaulle), then to continue by hire car or train for the rest of the journey. Paris is served by many airlines including Air France, British Airways, bmi, bmibaby, flybe, easyJet, Jet2, Thomsonfly and Aer Lingus. Lyon is served by British Airways, Air France, bmibaby, easyJet and bmi. There is a big railway station at Nevers, and it is possible to get a train to Nevers from Paris or almost any other city in France.

Property prices and availability in and around Decize
Property in Burgundy is not cheap, as although the region is not over populated by foreigners, it is very popular with the discerning French. Decize itself is unique and contained by its unusual location, so if you want to buy a property within the town you will need to move swiftly when one comes onto the market. There are, however, many lovely properties available in the surrounding villages and countryside.
