A town with charm… and a canal too!
The town of Montbard, in northern Burgundy, is a town with considerable charm. Set beside the lovely Burgundy canal, Montbard also has a delightful town centre, so shopping and dining are as much of a pleasure here as walking or boating! The town also has some interesting heritage sites, making it well worth a visit.

Great shops and a Friday market
Montbard has plenty to offer the keen shopper. The attractive main shopping street is peppered with intriguing shops, and you won’t want to leave without a bag full of locally produced goodies such as Dijon mustard, Burgundy wines and perhaps Champagne from the famous region just north of the town. There are supermarkets too, for your everyday needs, and the town has all other amenities such as banks, schools, doctors and dentists. Friday is market day, and this is definitely one to get up early for, as you won’t want to miss a minute. Full of scent and colour, the market in Montbard is a vibrant slice of French life as well as a chance to buy the freshest and best of local produce.

Fine dining, Burgundy style
The very name of the Burgundy region of France is synonymous with fine foods and wines, and you will find these available in many excellent restaurants in Montbard. Most of the menus are traditionally French, and it’s hard to make a bad choice as the cuisine of the region is nothing short of superb.

Visit the Grande Forge
Montbard’s most famous son, George-Louis Leclerk, Comte de Buffon, built a water-powered foundry just outside the town. Now completely reconstructed, it is an interesting place to visit, with its underground furnace and water-powered bellows. The town also has another tribute to Leclerk, in the form of a lovely nature park where you can see some rare and beautiful varieties of plants and trees.

Culture, nature and boating!
If you’ve had enough of the Comte, there are plenty of other things to do in and around Montbard. There are museums and art galleries, and particularly interesting is the Musée des Beaux Arts, which has a collection of Burgundian Art, all by local artists. Walkers and nature lovers will enjoy the Ermitage walk, and of course there is the ever lovely Burgundy canal, which positively invites you to amble under the cool green shade of the trees which line the towpaths, or to hire a boat and relax in style.

How to get there
It is possible to get a TGV into Montbard itself, as the town is a designated stop for the super-fast train on the Paris-Dijon line. This is probably the best way to reach the town, and certainly it is a fast and enjoyable experience. There is no airport close by which offers direct flights from the UK, but you can fly to Paris and catch a domestic flight to Dijon.

Property prices and availability in and around Montbard
Burgundy is a relatively expensive place to buy property, but Montbard is a little cheaper than Dijon, and there are still some bargains to be found if you look carefully. All types of property exist here, with farms and barns for renovation in the surrounding countryside, and attractive stone houses in the town.
