Leucate – ever changing character and atmosphere
Leucate, which is located on the Mediterranean coast of France, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, is actually made up of six distinct areas, each with its own character and atmosphere. Leucate village, ancient and charming; Leucate Plage, a popular beach resort; the naturist resort for those who prefer to be "au naturel"; the small family resort of La Franqui; Port Leucate, modern in character, with greater access to amenities such as cinemas, large shops, choice of restaurants; and Cap Leucate, with its wild beauty and radar stations.

Leucate village
If you are drawn to all that is old and charming about southern France, then Leucate village is the place to head for. This pretty village, complete with quaint cobbled streets and charming shuttered houses, blinking sleepily in the hot southern sunshine, is the perfect spot to capture all the glorious Mediterranean ambience you could wish for. The village has a few shops and amenities, but a tranquil air presides, even in summer when tourism is at its peak.

Leucate Plage
A beach resort with a stunning beach! (See our Leucate Plage Property Guide.)

La Franqui
Although not named with the word Leucate, La Franqui is widely considered to be part of the Leucate collection. La Franqui is an attractive and long established family resort, small and friendly in feel, and with a pretty beach with a forest of pine trees decorating one corner. La Franqui has some excellent fish restaurants, so do make the time to dine there, whatever else you do. The resort also hosts some sailing competitions, so check the schedules when planning a visit. (See our La Franqui Property Guide.)

Port Leucate
Port Leucate is the hub of the holiday trade, with clean looking modern Mediterranean architecture and lots of facilities. Here you can access large shops and supermarkets, watch a film at the cinema, have fun in the proliferation of bars and restaurants or simply chill out, knowing that everything you need is on hand. (For further information see our Port Leucate Property Guide.)

Cap Leucate
The wild beauty of Cap Leucate is a paradise for those who love nature and is a well known site for spotting rare migrating birds. There is also a naval radar station here, and a lighthouse.

Leucate and its salt water lakes
The Leucate region is also known for its unusual salt water lakes, or inland seas, known as étangs. These attract all manner of wildlife, and form a wonderful nature reserve where you can see wading birds such as the beautiful pink flamingoes, and also enjoy a spot of exciting windsurfing, the favoured sport in the area. The étangs make a great spot for this, as the big winds that buffet the Aude create exciting conditions without the danger of being blown out to sea, a real hazard on the open coast.

Around and about
Leucate is well placed to allow access to many places of interest. From here you can easily reach the lovely mediaeval cities of Carcassonne and Béziers, explore the quaint fishing villages of the coast and the Cathar trail that lies inland. Wine production is big business here, and wine tasting is high on many peoples' agenda when they arrive in Leucate!

How to get there
There are plenty of airports near Leucate which have direct flights from the UK. These include Montpellier, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Montpellier is served by GB Airways and Ryanair; Carcassonne by Ryanair; and Perpignan by Ryanair and bmibaby. Rail travel is also a good option, as you can take the Eurostar from England to Paris, then change to a TGV and travel in comfort to Montpellier or Toulouse.

Property prices and availability in and around Leucate
Property by the Mediterranean always comes at a price. Leucate is no less expensive than the rest of the Languedoc coast, but it still represents a big saving on the prices asked for similar property further east, into the hallowed boundaries of Provence and the Riviera. Rental incomes in Leucate are usually good, so investing in property here is generally a wise move.
