Cap d'Agde is a lively seaside resort that is located in the central south of France, in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon. Cap d'Agde is the seaside resort part of the original and ancient town of Agde, but has its own very distinct personality and attitude.
The Cap is well known for its excellent black sand beaches and its naturist (nudist) areas. And it is hard to put a figure on the population here, as it can change massively according to the season. Figures range from around 7,000 to 40,000 in peak times, many of these being holidaying naturists!
Cap d'Agde is considered the top seaside resort in the Languedoc, and it is certainly extremely popular. If what you are seeking is access to sun, sea and sand, then the Cap is perfect for you, as the location on the Med and the sunny southern climate are superb.
The attitude of the Cap (and "attitude" is probably the better word here than "ambience") to describe the Cap, is pretty much live and let live. Do what you want (and there is something for everyone here... really, everyone!) and don't raise an eyebrow at what others want to do. The Cap is well known as a nudist paradise, and although there are specific areas for this it is quite possible that you will come into contact with nudists at some point. Certainly most of the beaches are topless, even in the so called "textiles" (clothed) areas.
There is also a "swingers' scene" in evidence in parts of the resort, and one or two (!) colourfully dressed characters wandering about in the late evenings! If you are easily shocked, the Cap may not be the place for you... although there are family areas of the resort where the safe beaches, entertainment and warm seas appeal to those with more traditional interests too.
Cap d'Agde has it all, when it comes to shopping, dining and entertainment. Long established as one of France's premier seaside resorts, there is no shortage of anything here. From designer clothes to top restaurants, everything your heart desires is on sale at the Cap. There are nightclubs galore, cinemas and other entertainment all over town.
Cap d'Agde offers a multitude of sports and leisure activities, many of them connected with the sea and sand. Try sailing, swimming, surfing, jet skiing, scuba diving, and, of course, the oldest pastime of them all in the Cap... sunbathing!
It's really easy to get to Cap d'Agde. Montpellier is the nearest airport with direct flights from the UK with easyJet and Ryanair, but Carcassonne, Toulouse, Perpignan and Marseille are all viable. Carcassonne is served by Ryanair; Toulouse by British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe; Perpignan by flybe, Ryanair and bmibaby; and Marseille by British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Aer Lingus and bmibaby. Meanwhile, the TGV runs into Agde itself so train travel is a breeze.
Property in and around Cap d'Agde can be expensive. It is not the place to look if your budget is very tight, but as with any other popular resort, occasional bargains can be found if you know where to look. Properties on the market at the time of writing range from cabin bedrooms and studio apartments at under 70,000 Euros to luxury villas at over 800,000 Euros!
