Pignan - an historic small town

Pignan is an historic small town found amid the wild grasslands and vineyards of the Hérault department in the central southern French region of Languedoc-Roussillon. With a rich history and heritage, Pignan has lots to offer and is close to all the major attractions of this sought after area.

Explore Pignan's heritage

Pignan's heritage is well worth discovering, and there are several important sights. Start with a look at the Turenne Castle, dating back to 1673, with many mediaeval features and vestiges of the original walls from 1386. See too the Tower Fort Viel, a square tower, the Penitents Chapel, the Clock Tower and the Abbey of Vignogoul. There are also many original houses throughout the town to see.

Well equipped town providing all essential amenities

Pignan is well equipped with all shops, services and other amenities that you are likely to need, with schools, health care and all essentials. Much larger facilities are found just a short drive away in the cosmopolitan city of Montpellier.

Enjoy the outdoors

There could hardly be a lovelier area of France in which to enjoy day trips, sports and leisure activities or simply relaxing in the sunshine. The Hérault is known for its fabulous climate, with the Mediterranean Sea and all the resorts, beaches and fun almost on the doorstep. Take a tour of the vineyards and discover the local wines for which the department is famed far and wide, play a round of golf in the sunshine, see the area from horseback or get on your bike for a leisurely ride.

Visit historical Béziers and the fishing port of Sète

Besides Montpellier, which is a must see place, try a visit to the Cathar city of Béziers, rich in history and culture, the charming fishing port of Sète, or the stunning village of Saint Guilhem le Desert, classified as one of France's most beautiful villages.

How to get there

Both Montpellier and Béziers offer the chance to arrive direct from the UK by air. Montpellier is served by Ryanair and easyJet, and Béziers by Ryanair and Flybe. Or you can take a TGV to Montpellier and arrive by rail. If you are driving, and it is a good idea to have a car so you can make the most of the region's attractions, the town is on the D5/D27, not far from the N109 motorway (non toll road) and the A9 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Pignan

Although Hérault property can be expensive due to its desirability, all is not lost even if you aren't a millionaire. Currently (January 2012) a beautifully renovated village house could be yours for 290,160 Euros, which compares pretty well with the rest of the south of France.
