Pinet - a traditional wine village

The sun-drenched Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon in the central south of France is the setting for the lovely village of Pinet. Long associated with the production of the esteemed white wine, Picpoul de Pinet, the village is picturesque and close to all the attractions of the region. Pinet is also easily reached from the UK being within an easy drive of several airports, a TGV station and close to the A9 motorway.

Facilities available in the village

You will be in no doubt that Pinet is a wine village, there are more wine caves around the village and the area than other shops! However, there is a bakery, essential for those fresh baguettes and pastries, a newsagents, a general store and a bar/restaurant. When you need to go to the supermarket you will only have to take a short drive to nearby towns like Pezenas or Marseillan, while the principle city of Béziers is not far away.

Of Roman origin

Pinet can trace its roots back to Roman times, and there is a Roman road there which is a classified historical monument. See also the 19th century church, and the original wine growers' houses which are a feature of the area. Wine tastings are available at the wine caves and also the co operatives and wine domains that surround the village.

Visit the Etang de Thau

Pinet lies in a wonderful part of France. Close by, within a ten minute drive, you have the stunning Etang de Thau, a salt water lagoon rich in wildlife and shellfish. All around the étang are pretty waterside villages and towns which are noted for their seafood restaurants, so dining out is a real delight. Of course, a glass or two of the Picpoul de Pinet wine makes the perfect partner to a dish of mussels, and allows you to enjoy two local specialities at once!

Explore historical towns and Mediterranean villages

Places to visit include historical Pezenas, the harbour resort of Port Leucate and the charming Mediterranean village of Mèze, set on the shores of the lagoon. The Cathar cities of Béziers and Carcassonne are fabulous, with lots to see and do. Cap d'Agde and other lively seaside resorts are also nearby.

How to get there

There are several airports within a reasonable reach of Pinet that offer direct flights from the UK. The nearest are Béziers and Montpellier, served by Ryanair, and easyJet and Ryanair respectively. Carcassonne and Perpignan are also accessible. The TGV runs to Agde, while drivers will find Pinet easily from the A9 motorway.

Property prices and availability in and around Pinet

The Hérault, especially the towns and villages that are close to the coast, is a very popular area for house hunters, due to its obvious attractions. Property tends to be more expensive than say, in the Aude or the Lozère, but still represents good value when compared with nearby Provence. The potential for holiday letting is very good around Pinet, as the area is beloved of tourists.
