Châlus - a town with the legend of the Lionheart
The town of Châlus lies in the green agricultural heart and lakeland of France, in the tranquil department of the Haute-Vienne in the Limousin region of central France. The atmospheric ruined chateau that can still be seen in Châlus is famous... or perhaps notorious... for having been the death place of King Richard I of England. Richard was shot by a crossbow archer, Pierre Basile, during the siege of the castle.

Friendly market town
The Châlus of today is nothing like its brooding, dark castle, with a friendly welcome to all who come. Châlus is notable for its markets, of which there are two. There is a smaller market held every Friday, but the market that really draws the crowds is the big market that is held on the second Thursday of each month. This is apparently one of France's best, so if you are only visiting, then time your visit to coincide with the event!
|
Shops, schools and services
Châlus is well equipped with amenities, and you will find a range of service industries as well as plenty of local shops, schools, medical care and supermarkets. In short, it's a good place to live! Châlus has history and culture too, with its Lionheart connections, its street markets and lovely honey-coloured stone houses.
|
Out and about
Châlus and its immediate area offers lots of sport and leisure opportunities. The region is France's "Lakeland", with a plethora of beautiful leisure lakes where you can take part in water sports, swim, sunbathe and watch the children play. Days out are easy to decide upon too, with many interesting places to visit, history to discover and culture to absorb. Of special interest is the remembrance village of Oradour sur Glane, which is preserved as a living monument to those who were massacred there by the Nazis in one of France's worst wartime atrocities.

How to get there
The airport of Limoges is the best for air travel, although there is a new airport opening at Brive la Gaillard which could be another useful option. Limoges airport is served by Ryanair and flybe. Train travel is another possible choice, with the TGV getting you to Limoges and the local trains running in and out of Bussière Galant which is close by. Drivers should take the N21.

Property prices and availability in and around Châlus
The Haute-Vienne and the whole of the Limousin are thought of as a very affordable area of France, and with its beauty and tranquillity it is certainly worth viewing. Property in Châlus can offer a great opportunity to purchase your French dream home at a fraction of the price you could pay near Paris, for example, or in Provence and the south of the country. So if you fancy owning a property with its own lake, the area around Châlus is possibly the best chance you will have of finding an affordable one.
