Treignac - one of the most beautiful villages in France
The mediaeval market town of Treignac is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, and well deserves this grand billing. It is situated in prime Limousin countryside, at the foot of the Monédières Mountains. It is fresh and green, with rushing rivers, peaceful lakes and acres of lush pasture land. It is also brimful of history and character in a quintessentially French style. Add to all of this the fact that it has some of the most reasonably priced properties in France, and it is, simply, irresistible.

Historical Treignac
Treignac lies on the River Vezere and has ancient winding streets, authentic mediaeval houses and historical buildings. Worth visiting are its churches, including the Notre-Dame de la Paix which is famous for its twisted bell tower, and the 17th century Penitents Chapel. Then there is the 12th century market hall (which was infact re-built in the 15th century), the 15th century Gothic bridge, the castle ruins and the Chabirande Gate to explore. There were three entrances to this walled city, but the Chabirande Gate is the only one to survive.

Market town
The traditional street market is what draws so many to rural France, and it is true there is no pleasure that quite compares with that of watching a sleepy little town or village come to vibrant life as the market arrives and sets out its stalls in the sunshine. There are a good number of ordinary shops and services too.

Chocolate
Anyone who loves chocolate (is there anyone who doesn't?) will be extremely happy in Treignac, as there is a superb chocolate shop in the village, renowned for miles around. It's more than just an opportunity to buy great chocolate too, as you can take a tour of the workshop where the chocolate is made and learn all about the traditional methods, passed down through generations. The other very French delight of pavement cafés are also easy to find in the village, and provide a wonderful, if simple, way of passing a sunny afternoon, watching the world go by.

Beautiful lake
France has a way with lakes, and there is no region better at turning a lake into a natural leisure centre than the Limousin. Treignac has a beautiful lake all of its own, Bariousses Lake, where you can sunbathe on the sandy beaches, swim in the calm safe waters or sail and windsurf if you are feeling energetic. There are plenty of other sports available near to Treignac too, with walking, cycling, horse-riding and fishing all in the locality. You can also kayak and canoe on the River Vezere, but only if you are experienced.
|
How to get there
It is quite easy to get to Treignac from the UK, as there is an airport at nearby Limoges which offers cut price flights with Ryanair. It is also served by flybe. Rail travel is another good choice, as there is a station in the town of Uzerche, which is not far away. Drivers can access Treignac from Junction 43 of the A20 auto route.

Property prices and availability in and around Treignac
The Limousin region offers some of the best value properties in France, and in what a setting! Property in Treignac itself may cost you a little more than in the less desirable towns of the region, but the prices still bear comparison with almost anywhere in France and come out looking pretty good. A word of warning though... if a property does come up for sale in the village it is likely to sell very fast... so if you have your heart set on this "plus beau village" you will need to keep your eyes on the market and move swiftly.
