Bourganeuf’s secret past
Bourganeuf itself is a little town with a secret past. Once known as the headquarters of the society of the Knights Templar, Bourganeuf takes its place in the legendary mysteries in which such societies are involved. There are even links to the Da Vinci Code story in which author Dan Brown spins a tale of intrigue surrounding the Holy Grail.

Modern day Bourganeuf
Modern day Bourganeuf, however, is a little more down to earth, although it will in no way disappoint! The town is a very attractive market town, typical of its region, with interesting buildings and charming little streets to explore. The town is well supplied with shops and restaurants, and there is plenty to see and do.

A tower for a Turk…
There is a five storey tower, built with massive oak beams, which is known as the tower of Zizim. This is said to have been built as a place of refuge for a Turkish prince, Prince Djem, to enable him to escape the murderous intentions of his brother, the Sultan. Whether or not this story is true, the tower is well worth a visit, as it has magnificent views from the top. It is open for visitors from the beginning of July until the end of August each year.

How to get there
Getting to Bourganeuf from the UK is not difficult, thanks to airlines such as Ryanair and flybe who now offer flights to many airports in rural France. You can fly to Limoges with these airlines at very low cost from Stansted, Liverpool, Southampton or East Midlands airports. If you enjoy driving through France to reach your destination you will find the town is accessed not far from the A20 motorway.

Property in and around Bourganeuf can still represent a real bargain, especially when the prices are compared with those in many other parts of France. Be warned, though, this situation is unlikely to continue as more and more people are discovering the region!
