A picturesque Gascon town
The town of l’Isle-Jourdain, in the Gers department in south-west France, is situated in beautiful countryside. Your journey to the town takes you through a timeless landscape of fields of giant golden sunflowers, soft green pastures and traditional half-timbered farmsteads. The town is typical of many in the region. Fiercely protective of its Gascon heritage, l'Isle-Jourdain celebrates its history and this is evident in the buildings themselves and also in the excellent museums.

Saturday market
Every Saturday there is a market held in the town, and this is a truly massive affair! The market covers the main street, the Place de la Mairie and the Place Gambetta, and no fewer than 130 traders set up their stalls to sell their wares. The products on offer range from fresh fruit and vegetables to shoes and fashion items, and there is a special Gascon emphasis on the local traditional gastronomy, with duck and goose products taking pride of place.

A proud heritage
The town is very proud of its history, and has a very interesting Bell Museum, as well as a museum which houses a number of differently themed spaces, offering insights into the history of clocks, bells, archaeological finds and iron work. There is a church with a tall clock tower reaching up to the blue southern skies, and a little nearer to the ground there are some very beautiful and colourful stained glass windows to admire. The Hotel de Ville, or Town Hall, is also a very impressive and elegant building, constructed from local stone.

A pretty bandstand
If you take a walk down the Esplanade, as l’Isle-Jourdain residents have enjoyed doing for many years, you will come across a pretty, traditional bandstand, which features on old sepia postcards of the town. As you stand and stare you can almost feel the years slip backwards, and hear the music of days long gone…

Shopping and a varied gastronomy
L’Isle-Jourdain offers some interesting shops as well as the usual food shops and other amenities. If eating out is on your mind you will have plenty of choice too, as the town has a great selection of restaurants ranging from the Hostellerie du Lac, the large hotel on the side of the lake, to small and friendly pizzerias and crêperies.

Leisures and pleasures
There is plenty to occupy you in l’Isle-Jourdain, because as well as the museums the town boasts a library, a cinema, a swimming pool, a golf course, mini golf, and a huge lake where there are a number of water sports possible.

How to get there
Reaching l’Isle-Jourdain by air is simple, as there are a number of airlines which fly to Toulouse direct from the UK, including British Airways, bmibaby, easyJet, flybe and bmi. Toulouse also has a TGV station, making rail travel a realistic option.

Property prices and availability in and around l’Isle-Jourdain
Property in the Gers is usually still realistically priced, especially in comparison with other areas in the south of the country. The town offers various types of property ranging from traditional town houses to modern villas on the outskirts, and the surrounding countryside is a goldmine of lovely Gascon farms and farm buildings ripe for conversion.
