The exotically named Argelès Gazost is a spa town that lies close to the renowned Pyrénéan ski resort of Cauterets, in the Haute-Pyrénées department of south-west France. Argelès Gazost is renowned for its thermalism, with people travelling from far and wide to test the efficacy of its waters which are said to promote health and to heal many ailments. The town itself is attractive and well located in glorious scenery with good transport links to the UK.

You do not have to head for the ski resorts to find plenty to do, because here in Argelès there is not only a good range of shops and restaurants, but also a good range of entertainment and leisure activities. Cauterets
The ski resort of Cauterets (subject of a recent television documentary) is just up the road, and is gaining in popularity with ski fans from the UK and elsewhere all the time. The resorts of the Pyrénées are not as big or well known as those of the Alps, but they have the advantage of shorter queues at the lifts, friendlier towns and villages, and scenery that is every bit as spectacular, perhaps even more so!

How to get there
To reach Argelès Gazost you can fly to one of several airports that are within reach of the town. Pau is the closest of these, with direct flights from the UK with budget airline Ryanair. Toulouse is only an hour and a half away, and has flights with British Airways, easyJet, bmi, Jet2 and flybe, while Biarritz is also within reach, and is currently served by Ryanair. Rail travel is also possible, with the TGV taking you to either Toulouse or to Tarbes, from where you can access a local train service to the pilgrim town of Lourdes, close to Argelès. If you are driving, you can find the town from the A64 auto route and then the RN21.

Property prices and availability in and around Argelès Gazost
Argelès Gazost has some interesting property propositions at very reasonable prices, unlike many southern French towns. It is still possible to find renovation projects here too, which can be difficult in the Midi-Pyrénées these days.
