A small yet interesting spa town and ski resort
Cauterets does not lay claim to being the largest ski resort or spa town in France, but it is an attractive little place with an interesting history. Neo-classical in its architecture, the town is typical of its area and its origins as a thermal spa centre. Cauterets has a large number of hotels and rental apartments as its main industry is tourism, but it also provides some good shops and other facilities. There are a few good restaurants to choose from, including an excellent pizzeria and a restaurant known as La Brulerie which is found in a pedestrianised area down by the river. Here apparently, you can order an English breakfast or choose to start the day in traditional French style and enjoy croissants and coffee. After breakfast, if you are not heading up the mountain for skiing, you might like to try ice skating, at Cauterets’ very popular ice skating centre.

Hot springs and health giving waters
Cauterets is renowned not just for the fabulous skiing and mountain sports it offers, but also for its waters. There are thermal springs all around the area, and the waters are said to have health giving properties. The town’s origins are firmly rooted in the popularity of thermalism, and even today Cauterets is popular with those who wish to benefit from the properties of the waters there. They are said to be particularly effective for those suffering from ear, nose and throat complaints. Even if you are perfectly healthy however, the thermal baths and springs are most enjoyable, but the sulphur in the water has a tendency to turn jewellery black…so leave the silver at home!

Out and about near Cauterets
The town of Cauterets is situated in the Pyrénean Mountains, and so is in a wonderful location for those who enjoy skiing and other mountain sports such as canyoning, rafting and walking. The scenery is spectacular, and for those who wish to venture a little further afield there is plenty to see and do. The famous town of Lourdes is within easy reach, and just a little further away are the Grottes de Betharram. This enormous cave takes around an hour and a half to explore with an experienced guide, and has some amazing rock formations created by centuries of dripping water and calcified natural materials.

How to get there
Getting to Cauterets from the UK is economical and easy now, thanks to budget airline Ryanair who have recently added Pau to their list of destinations from London Stansted. You could also fly to Toulouse or Perpignan, which are served by bmibaby, with flights from Manchester. Those who prefer to travel by ferry will enjoy the sea trip from the UK to the Basque port of Santander.

Property prices and availability in and around Cauterets
If you are seeking a home in an excellent ski resort and do not want to pay extremely high prices, the town of Cauterets could be just the place. Cauterets is considerably cheaper than similar resorts in the Alps, yet provides great skiing and an unspoiled natural environment. Property here is rising in value however, as Ryanair flights into Pau have brought the town to greater prominence. There is large variety of property available, with holiday apartments, chalets, old town houses and farmsteads in the surrounding countryside.
