For buying and selling property in Vic-en-Bigorre

A town with the heart of a village

Vic-en-Bigorre, in the lovely Adour Valley in south-west France, is a town which has a friendly village atmosphere. Once even more important than Tarbes (the principal town of the department), the town now has a little under 5,000 inhabitants. It has a thriving economy, and has recently benefited from considerable local investment.

Everything on hand…

The town offers all the amenities required for modern life, albeit in an area which is teeming with history. Vic-en-Bigorre has excellent shops, bars and restaurants, as well as schools at all levels and for all ages, a cinema, a public swimming pool and a superb covered market on Saturday mornings.

The oldest house in town

On the Rue Jeanne d’Albret there stands a house which dates back to the 12th century. This is officially the oldest house in town… but there is also an interesting mediaeval building in the shape of St Martin’s Church. This is open for anyone to go in and enjoy some of its beautiful and historic features.

Statues by local sculptors

Vic-en-Bigorre has two interesting statues, both of which commemorate those who have died in war. The statues were created by local sculptors: one, “The Revenge” was sculpted by Edmund Desca; while the second, a World War 1 memorial, was sculpted by Martial Caumont. Also worth seeing in Vic are the three ancient water mills which mark an important period of the town’s agricultural history.

Beauty and history all around

The town lies in an area which combines natural beauty and history, meaning that there will always be plenty to do and plenty of places of interest to visit. The great towns of Tarbes, Pau and Toulouse are all within reach, and Vic-en-Bigorre is also only around an hour and half’s drive away from Spain.

Sports galore

Sports fans will be spoiled for choice as the town is close to the ski resorts of the Pyrénées, the Atlantic coast with the surfers’ paradise of Biarritz, and even the warm waters of the Mediterranean are less than four hours away! Most sports are available locally, including walking, swimming, tennis, horse-riding and mountain biking.

How to get there

To reach Vic-en-Bigorre, you have a few choices. Both Pau and Toulouse are close to hand, and offer flights to and from the UK with a number of airlines. Pau is served by Ryanair and Toulouse by bmibaby, British Airways, easyJet, flybe and bmi. The town of Tarbes offers the possibility of train travel also, as there is a TGV stop there.

Property prices and availability in and around Vic-en-Bigorre

Prices in Vic-en-Bigorre may not be as high as you expect. Although the region has experienced increased interest and property price rises in recent times, there is still a good deal of bargain property to be found, as long as you are not looking in a major town. Vic-en-Bigorre makes a perfect base, being a good sized town but less expensive than Tarbes. In the countryside around Vic there are a number of well priced renovation projects available, although they do tend to sell quickly once they are on the market.
