Castelsarrasin, set amidst the massive fertile plains of the Tarn-et-Garonne department of south-west France, is an historic and fascinating town. Lying on the left bank of the Lateral Canal de la Garonne, Castelsarrasin is a lively place in the long summer months, when the holiday barges moor up there and the town forms a starting and finishing point for cruises.
Then town has its origins way back in 961, when it was first documented as a community, and throughout history it has come to prominence on several occasions. Notably, it played an important role in the crusades against the Albigensians and again in the Hundred Years War.
The Church of Saint-Saveur in Castelsarrasin is well worth a visit. In the church you can see some fabulous and beautiful Baroque furniture, which imparts a real sense of the history of the place. Castelsarrasin also has some of the original fortification in existence and there are some lovely old houses happily co-existing with the modern administrative buildings. Simply following the walking routes round the town is also a delight, as Castelsarrasin is noted for its lovely floral displays in spring and summer.
