Montauban is often referred to as the little sister of France’s third city, Toulouse. Montauban has a similar appearance to its larger neighbour, as it is built of the same pink brick that gives Toulouse its soubriquet of La Ville Rose. It would be a mistake, however, to dismiss Montauban as having little to distinguish it.

Full of history
The city is brimful of history, having played a significant role in the Albigensian crusades and later struggles, and this history is evident even today. If you look up at the façade of the Saint Jacques Church you can see the marks made in the brick by the cannon fire from the guns of Louis XIII’s army.

Montauban provides a really wonderful shopping experience, as not only does it offer a really wide selection of shops of all shapes and sizes, but also it sites these in a beautiful and historic setting. Just a short distance away lies the lovely Cathedral de Notre Dame, its pure white stonework contrasting vividly with the pink brick of the rest of the city. Meanwhile the River Tarn, which is such an integral part of the city, is also notable for the old bridge, the Pont Vieux, which spans it. From here you can gaze onto the left bank, to the section of the town where the wealthy merchants once had their residences, and indeed, it is a vantage point for a panoramic view of the entire city.

How to get there
Montauban is close to Toulouse, so flying is simple. Toulouse airport is served by BA, easyJet, bmi, bmibaby and flybe, and all of these offer direct flights from the UK. Rail travel is also recommended, as once again Toulouse can offer a convenient arrival point with its TGV station.
Property prices and availability in and around Montauban
Montauban lies in the department of the Tarn-et-Garonne, which has recently experienced considerable rises in property prices, due to a vastly increased interest in the area. The town does, however, still compare favourably with other towns in the south of the country, and it is still possible to snap up a bargain if you have a good eye!

Agriculture is the essence of the economy, with horses, game and poultry of particular significance. There is also some industry, namely, textiles, flour milling, market gardening, saw mills, furniture manufacture and millinery.
Interesting fact:
The well known painter Ingres was born in Montauban in 1780, and the Musée d’Ingres is well worth a visit, with many paintings and drawings bequeathed to the town by the artist.
