Sourdeval is a cheerful little market town that lies in the lovely and distinctive "Bocage" countryside of the Manche department in Lower Normandy. The town is well placed for accessing Mont St Michel, beach resorts like Granville and all the many lovely attractions of the region. It is also within easy reach of the ferry ports making it ideal for weekend breaks.
Perhaps the most impressive building in Sourdeval is the fabulous Church of Saint Peter, which is certainly worth taking the trouble to visit. There are many authentic old buildings around the town as well, giving a typically Norman ambience.
As Sourdeval is a market town, the Tuesday morning market is the piece de resistance of local life and a great place to find superb local cheeses, ciders and more. There is also a livestock market attached, which is always interesting even if you don't want to buy a cow yourself! The shops, supermarkets and restaurants of Sourdeval make life easy and pleasant, and provide just about everything you are likely to need.
Just up the road from Sourdeval is the town of Mortain, famed for its abbey and also for its beautiful waterfalls. A little further afield is the stunning island town of Mont St Michel, perhaps Normandy's premier attraction. Whilst the town of Sourdeval is set in an inland location, the coast and the lively resorts of the seaside are not far away, and are certainly close enough for day trips in the summer.
Normandy has masses of lovely, unspoilt countryside, and this beautiful "Bocage" area is ideal for walkers, horse riders, cyclists and fishermen. Golf courses are also within easy reach of Sourdeval.
Airports to head for if you want to fly, are Dinard or Rennes. Dinard is served by Ryanair and Aurigny, while Rennes is served by Flybe. Ferry travel is a good idea, as Caen is within a short distance of your destination and the ports of St Malo, Cherbourg and Le Havre are also accessible. If you are driving you will find the village on the D977/D911 roads, with the nearest major road being the A84 auto route.
Property is often very good value for money in and around Sourdeval, so bargain hunters should not miss out. Prices begin at under 100,000 Euros, with a good selection of country houses and landed properties suitable for equestrian use, a little higher up the scale.
