Argentan – a town with an indomitable spirit
The town of Argentan, which is found in the north of France in the Lower Normandy region, is a town with an indomitable spirit. It suffered badly in the world wars, losing many of its young men as well as its lovely historical buildings to the ravages of battle. Yet it has refused to accept defeat and has risen phoenix like from its own ashes to re-establish itself as a charming and thriving city.

Stunning location
Argentan lies between the beautiful and diverse landscapes of the Suisse Normande, with its dramatic hills, lush green valleys and rushing white water rivers to the west, and the cool green butterfly paradise of the Forêt de Gouffern to the east.

Beautiful cathedrals
Argentan has two lovely and elegant cathedrals, and these, along with other beautiful churches, are most certainly worth a visit. Other places of interest within the town include the Tour (Tower) Marguerite, a Benedictine Abbey, the old fortifications and a grand chateau which now houses the town's law courts. Modern architecture, necessitated by the damage sustained in the wars, has added an extra dimension to Argentan's profile, and there is much to admire here too, with the modern and impressive Town Hall as a shining example.

Argentan’s cultural heritage
The town has a rich and intriguing cultural heritage, and one of the most interesting places to go to discover this is the Maison de Dentelles. This is a museum set in picturesque fashion by the side of a lake, which tells the story of the famous Point d'Argentan lace.

Cheese and cider
The twin pleasures of cheese and cider form a delicious part of the famous Norman gastronomy, and in Argentan you have plenty of opportunity to enjoy these and more. The town has plenty of good restaurants, and also provides excellent shopping facilities with small and interesting boutiques, traditional French boulangeries and chocolateries, and supermarkets for ease and convenience.

The Kingdom of the Horse
The region in which Argentan lies is known to some as the Kingdom of the Horse, and there is no doubt that this is prime horse country. Lovers of this noble animal will find a paradise here, and if you are seeking an equestrian property in France there can be no better place to begin looking. There is even an acknowledged horse breeding area, known as Haras National du Pin.

Activities and sports
There is no difficulty in finding plenty to do in and close to Argentan, and the lovely Norman countryside positively invites exploration on horseback, on foot or by bicycle. The rushing waters found in the dramatic Suisse Normande region are great for rafting and canoeing, whilst the Forest of Gouffern on the east side of the town is a paradise for nature lovers and boasts a superb butterfly population. If you are seeking an activity that will involve the whole family, try the excellent Aquatic Centre in Argentan. Further exploration of the region will take you to the capital city of Alençon, or to the pretty town of Mortagne au Perche, where the wonderful Percheron heavy horses are bred.

How to get there
If you want to fly, the best airport to fly to is Paris Charles de Gaulle, where you will find a good choice of airlines and departure airports from the UK. Airlines serving Paris include Air France, British Airways, bmi, bmibaby, flybe, easyJet, Jet2, Thomsonfly and Aer Lingus. The best way to access Argentan, however is probably by ferry, as the ports of Le Havre, Caen, Cherbourg and St Malo are all very accessible.

Property prices and availability in and around Argentan
Property in this area still represents very good value, but prices are rising and interest is increasing, so don't wait too long before you finalise that deal! Look out for parcels of building land in good locations, for renovation properties and equestrian properties in particular. Unlike in some regions of France, land is relatively easy to come by here, so if you want to purchase your own piece of prime French countryside then maybe this will be the place to find it.
