La Ferté Macé is a vibrant, small market town set in picturesque surroundings in the Lower Normandy region of northern France. The town has various attractions to its name, and is well placed for visiting the main destinations of the area such as the Normandy beaches, the war museums and sites, Mont St Michel and the pretty spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne.
The town has lots of shops, services and restaurants, and also hosts a large and very good market on Friday mornings. There's even a hypermarket, useful for those big shopping trips. The town also has schools, health care, sports facilities and entertainment including numerous cultural events and festivals held throughout the year.
The Christmas markets are particularly atmospheric and not to be missed for a magical experience. Meanwhile the church is well worth a look, as its twin spires and sixteen bells make it quite a local celebrity! Also take a look at the excellent Toy Museum and the beautiful Rose Garden.
In addition to these modern needs and pleasures, La Ferté Macé has some interesting features to discover. On the edge of the town there is a lovely leisure lake, a great place to relax and enjoy those long, summer days or to walk and take in the beauty of nature when the weather is not quite so warm. Near the town there are also plentiful sporting activities to enjoy, including golf, horse-riding, swimming, sailing and fishing.
This part of Normandy has numerous attractions, so you will never be at a loss as to what to do in your leisure time. The spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne is nearby, and as well as spa treatments, offers a delightful ambience and good facilities for enjoying a spot of shopping and dining. The mediaeval town of Domfront, also nearby, is another highlight not to be missed. A little further away is the famous romantic and mysterious island town of Mont St Michel, or should you prefer, the more sobering reminders of the tragic events of the World Wars are also within reach.
