Forges les Eaux – a popular spa town
Forges les Eaux is a popular and charming spa town found in Upper Normandy, in the department of the Seine-Maritime in the central north of France. Initially an iron mining town, in the 16th century it became more well known for its therapeutic waters. And since then it has had visitors flocking to enjoy these health giving waters and clear, pure air, and to enjoy the little town's many charms and beautiful setting.
|
Lots to do
For a small town Forges certainly packs a lot in. There is a pottery museum, telling the story of the days when ceramics were a big economic force in the town, and a multitude of attractive shops where you can not only obtain all the necessities of life, but also enjoy browsing for curios (including pottery marked with the famed old logo of Forges), local specialities and, of course, wines, cheeses and ciders. If you like museums, there is another in town that is worth a look too, namely, le Musée des Maquettes Hippomobiles (the Museum of Horse-drawn Models).
|
Social scene
There's quite a social scene in town with a great collection of bars, restaurants and a splendid Belle Epoque casino, where you can gamble away your excess money, if you are lucky enough to have any! The young... or the young at heart... can go to the disco, and there is even a karaoke held at times, so you can bring out your inner star!

Out and about
If you have ever wondered what the English countryside looked like before man stepped in to spoil it, then take a look at the green glories of the area around Forges. Green fields, forests, rivers and tranquil lakes abound, and there are endless possibilities for sports and leisure activities in this lovely region. Walk, cycle, play tennis, swim in the town's own open air pool, or play golf on the course at nearby St Saens, or even at Dieppe if you want to combine it with a trip to this fascinating port town. Visit Rouen, where history oozes from every pour, or relive a little history by visiting the famous Normandy beaches. The beaches are great for sun and sea days as well as providing a sobering memorial to the War.
|
How to get there
The ports of Dieppe and Le Havre are both near, so ferry travel makes sense. You also have the choice of the Chunnel or Eurostar close at hand. You could take the Eurostar to Calais, Lille or Paris. Going by road you will find the town not far from the A28 auto route. Flying isn't such a good idea, as there is no international airport in the vicinity at the time of writing, although it is possible to fly to Paris and make your way north. Paris Charles de Gaulle is served by Air France, British Airways, bmi, bmibaby, flybe, easyJet, Jet2, Thomsonfly and Aer Lingus, while Paris Beauvais is served by Ryanair.
