With its position beside the waters of the lovely River Varenne, the town of Ambrières les Vallées has a delightful setting in the picturesque countryside of the northern Mayenne department in the Pays de la Loire. It's a small town, but one which has everything you need in the form of local shops, services, leisure activities and character.

Well equipped with shops and services

While many small French towns do not offer much in the way of shops and local services, Ambrières les Vallées lacks for nothing in this department. Shops you can find around town include a supermarket and smaller general stores, bakers, butchers, pharmacies, a post office, a delicatessen, and even fashion boutiques. There are schools, doctors' surgeries (including an English speaking doctor) garages and banks. If you want to inject a little history and culture into your day, you can pay a visit to the Weaving Museum.

There's an indoor sports hall, a swimming pool with slides, tennis courts, canoeing on the river and a mini golf course for fun! The area around the town is renowned for its beauty and is especially popular with equestrians.

After all that healthy activity it will be good to know that Ambrières also has a selection of good restaurants where you can enjoy a meal out, whether you like a simple pizza or crepe or something a little more sophisticated.

Lower Normandy is on the doorstep

The advantage of being based in Ambrières les Vallées is that you have all the attractions of not just the northern parts of the Pays de la Loire on your doorstep, but also those of Lower Normandy too. Hence days out can take you to the stunning island town of Mont St Michel, one of the most popular destinations in France, the Normandy beaches and War Memorial Sites and seaside resorts.

Closer to home is a fascinating Cider Museum at Melleray la Vallée. Heading south-east will bring you to the motor racing city of Le Mans, where, in addition to the race track there is a lovely historic city to discover.

How to get there

Air travel can get you to the airports of Rennes or Dinard, with Tours, Nantes and Paris also feasible options. Rennes is served by Flybe and Dinard by Ryanair and Aurigny. The best ferry ports to head for if you are travelling by boat are St Malo, Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg. Rail travel is another possible choice as Le Mans is near to the town and has a TGV station. Finally, those who are travelling by road will find Ambrières on the intersection of the D23 and D33 roads, near to the N12.
