Baugé - scene of an epic battle
The town of Baugé, which is located in the west of France in the inland department of Maine-et-Loire, was the scene of an epic battle during the Hundred Years War. The Battle of Baugé was a massive and influential defeat for the English in 1421, and one that saw a historic and important victory for the Franco-Scots. But, that was then, and this is now. The Baugé of today welcomes visitors and newcomers be they French, Scots or English (or any other nationality for that matter), and offers excellent facilities and a great range of activities and entertainment in or within reach of the town.
|
Bustling market town
Baugé is a bustling and attractive market town set in the heart of the delightful and interesting chateau country of mid France. The town offers a good range of facilities, having supermarkets, shops, health care, schools, and that all important epitome of "Frenchness", a general market. This is held each Monday, though unusually, it's held in the afternoon and not the morning. So even if you aren't an early riser you can enjoy the rich pickings to be found on the stalls.
|
Baugé Forest
The Baugé Forest offers scope for many activities, even including the old favourite, a teddy bears' picnic, if you have young children and feel so inclined! Other possibilities are cycling, walking, horse-riding, orienteering and birdwatching.
|
Baugé Golf Course
Then, of course, nearby is the internationally acclaimed Baugé Golf Course, perhaps a distant product of the Scottish influence brought to the town during the Hundred Years War, when the Franco-Scots beat the English out of town. It was after this time that they allegedly taught the locals to appreciate the fun of hitting a little white ball with a strangely shaped stick... it seems to have caught on!
|
Nights at the opera
If nights at the opera are your thing, then Baugé is the prefect French location for you. Modelled on Glyndebourne, the opera event takes place every summer in the grounds of a wonderful country house just on the edge of town. Don't forget to pack the ice bucket, you will need it for the champagne!

Out and about
There can hardly be a better region to be in if you want to enjoy a huge variety of days out. Go to watch the exciting motor racing at Le Mans, see the amazing displays of horsemanship at the equitation centre at Saumur, experience the thrill of the magical displays of the Puy du Fou or perhaps enjoy the fairy tale chateaux of the Loire Valley. Then you can also visit the famous wine domains and taste-test the wines from the attendant vineyards, explore the great city of Nantes, and discover that all this and even the Atlantic Ocean too is at your disposal from a base in Maine-et-Loire.
|
How to get there
If you want to fly from the UK, you can choose to fly into Tours, Nantes or Angers. Tours is served by Ryanair, Nantes by Ryanair and Aer Arann, and Angers by Eastern Airways. The train is also an option, as you can take Eurostar to Paris and then link to a TGV for Nantes or Saumur. If driving, follow the A11 then the D18 to get to Baugé.
