Beaufort en Vallée is an elegant market town that lies in the pretty, green countryside of the Maine et Loire department of western France. One of the most prosperous towns in the region before the Revolution, the Beaufort of today is still thriving and vibrant, with excellent amenities and a wealth of heritage.
Beaufort en Vallée is a good sized town, with just under 6,000 permanent residents. The residents are well catered for, as in town all shops and services can be found in addition to many non necessities such as cafés, bars and restaurants which make life a pleasure. Two weekly markets are an extra bonus, with a general market held every Wednesday morning and a wonderful organic produce market on Friday afternoons.
There is plenty to see in the town, with the Notre Dame Church being probably the most noteworthy sight. Other places worth a look include the Castle of Jeanne de Laval, a very influential figure in the town's history, a restored market hall, the Joseph Denais Museum and the Place Jeanne de Laval, the hub of life in the town. Numerous cultural events are held in Beaufort en Vallée, with feasts, festivals, shows and exhibitions all forming part of the fun.
There is no shortage of things to do or places to explore in the immediate vicinity of Beaufort en Vallée. Take a walk along the banks of the lovely River Loire, visit the Castle Montgeoffroy or the Château de Bauge or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the numerous walking trails. If you prefer to get even more active, there are golf courses, riding stables, swimming pools and fishing all close to the town. Travelling a little further afield you can discover the city of Angers, the regional capital of Nantes, or even head for the coast to enjoy the stunning Atlantic beaches and seaside resorts.
To reach the area by air you can head for Tours, Nantes or Rennes. Tours is served by Ryanair; Nantes by Air France, Flybe, easyJet and Ryanair; and Rennes by Flybe. If you prefer the train, TGV services will get you to Le Mans, Angers or Nantes. Meanwhile St Malo is the nearest ferry port, while drivers will find the town from the from the A85 auto route.
