The elegant little town of Doué la Fontaine, which is found lying in the chateaux country of inland western France in the Maine-et-Loire department of the Pays de la Loire region, is famous as the home of the rose. The most beloved of all flowers is grown here in enormous numbers and in infinite varieties, and is celebrated annually in a superbly scented and colourful festival to which people come not only from all over France, but from all over the world.
Doué la Fontaine has good shops and facilities, with just about everything you will need for everyday life being available in the town, as well as that all important weekly market, held every Monday morning. For a small town in an inland department of France, Doué really has a lot to offer its residents and visitors. Not only does it have its roses and rosés, but also it has some fascinating troglodyte (cave) dwellings nearby. There is also a renowned zoo at Doué, and with the city of Saumur just a short drive away it is safe to say that you will never be stuck for something to do around Doué la Fontaine!
Motor sports fans will be pleased to know that there are opportunities for both go-karting and off-road motorcycling locally, as well as the more usual sporting activities of golf, swimming, fishing, cycling, walking and horse-riding.
If you want to fly from the UK, you can choose to fly into Tours, Nantes or Angers. Tours is served by Ryanair, Nantes by Ryanair and Aer Arann, and Angers by Eastern Airways. The train is also possible, as you can take Eurostar to Paris then link to a TGV for Saumur.
