The River Loire
The Loire is France's longest river and it runs through the centre of this region (as its name suggests).

A focus on agriculture
Pays-de la Loire is largely an agricultural area with traditional arable land, rolling countryside and areas of cultivated marsh land. The southern part of the coast is perfect for the cultivation of oysters and other shellfish and this area produces more than any other in France.

Caves - an important feature of the area!
Wine production in this area includes Muscadet, Rose d'Anjou and the most popular sparkling wine after Champagne - Saumur. As well as wine, Saumur boasts a large mushroom cultivation industry (grown in huge natural caves). Up until quite recently the caves have been used as housing by "troglodytes" and they're commonly used for the commercial storage of wines by the famous chateaux in the region (many of which will give you tours).

A centre for ship building
There are areas of substantial industry in the south of Pays-de la Loire with factories and shipyards in La Rochelle and St Nazaire.

How to get there
The region benefits from excellent communication both internationally via budget airlines and to Paris via TGV.

Property prices
The Vendée in particular, is very popular with foreign homeowners as well as french retirees. Property prices in this region have been increasing quicker than the average rates in the rest of France
