La Flèche - a town of flowers
The town of La Flèche, which is located in the Pays de la Loire in north-western France, is a large town and a sub prefecture of the Sarthe department. Known as a town of flowers, summer is a wonderfully pretty and colourful time to be in La Flèche, as the townsfolk take a great pride in living up to their reputation for producing some stunning and colourful floral displays. La Flèche lies on the River Loir (as distinct from the Loire) along its journey to the Atlantic Ocean.

Land of chateaux
La Flèche is situated in the heart of France's famed chateau country, and the town has its very own, the Château de Carmes. Partially reconstructed after fire and battle damage, the original gable of the keep dating back to 1450, can still be seen. There is another grand set of buildings which form the Jesuits College, famously created in the 17th century by Henry 1V as a training college for young noblemen. One illustrious former student was none other than Descartes! Today the college still retains its educational status, but serves as a training college for officers of the military.

Enjoying La Flèche!
After you have seen the historically important parts of town, there is still plenty to enjoy in La Flèche. Take a stroll down the pretty rue Lyonnaise, which glories in its elegant ancient buildings and some lovely gardens, or sip a strong , black coffee in the shade of a street café in the main square, place Henri 1V. Here you can relax and enjoy the cool refreshing sight of a fountain splashing its crystal cascades down in the sunlight, and admire the imposing statue of the aforementioned King in the centre, recalling the town's royal links.

La Flèche offers all amenities
For those considering an extended stay in La Flèche, it is reassuring to know that the town is also well equipped with shops, banks, health services, schools and other amenities. For after hours, La Flèche also offers a great choice of bars and restaurants.

A lake, beaches and play area too!
La Flèche is a great place to be for those who love to be out of doors and active. There is a super man-made lake near the town, with safe, sandy beaches. It is ideal for swimming, sailing, sun bathing and picnicking. For those with children, there is an excellent play park too. Even golfers can play their favourite game on a choice of good courses nearby, and there are many other activities available in or close to the town.

Top zoo at La Flèche!
The zoo at La Flèche is renowned far and wide, as one of France's best. Not for La Flèche are the cruel, small cages and cramped unnatural quarters for the animals that are seen in far too many zoos. Here the animals are housed sympathetically to their species, and allowed to live as naturally as possible. The lovely riverside setting, excellent cafés and entertainment such as displays of the ancient art of falconry, make the zoo a fantastic place to spend a day, with or without the kids!

Out and about
If you want to explore the surrounding area (and why not indeed?) you could possibly begin with a look at the fabulous Château Le Lude. Or take a trip to the famous French equitation centre at Saumur, explore the bustling city of Tours or simply walk, cycle or drive around discovering some of the area's best kept secrets for yourself.

How to get there
Angers and Tours are the nearest airports, which offer flights with Eastern Airways and Ryanair respectively. Flying to Paris is another option, which offers a multitude of airlines to choose from. Rail travel is also possible, with Eurostar taking you to Paris, and the TGV running into Tours. If you are driving you will find the town from the A11 between Le Mans and Nantes.

Property prices and availability in and around La Flèche
Property prices around La Flèche are generally in the middle bracket, taken against figures for France as a whole. Less expensive then the Riviera or Paris, yet perhaps a little pricier than the Limousin or the Auvergne, there is still some excellent affordable property to be found in and around La Flèche.
