Le Croisic – a former pirate city
Le Croisic, once a centre of piracy, is now a beautiful family resort and active fishing port that is located on the west coast of France, in the department of the Loire-Atlantique. It lies on a little peninsula jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, and offers some amazing views from its cliff tops as well as some excellent rocky bays and safe, clean sandy beaches.

Historical and interesting
Le Croisic has a fascinating history to discover, and this is in evidence in the old centre of the town as well as in the many tales and legends that abound, telling of the days when the town was notable, not as a family oriented holiday resort, but a notorious centre of piracy. The old buildings, including rich merchants' houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, and the many quaint streets of the town centre call to mind the old days instantly, and give a great character that lifts Le Croisic above the ordinary seaside resorts.

Lively atmosphere
The town is lively, although not, perhaps, as frenetic as near neighbour La Baule. There are plenty of things to do and see, with a full complement of shops, services and restaurants, providing just about everything you could require for either a holiday, or for full-time living. A traditional market is held three times a week in the summer months, and twice a week in the off season period. The catch of the day is also sold, fresh as it arrives on shore, from the fish market near the Trehic Jetty. Le Croisic also hosts fêtes and festivals all season long, and details of what's on when can be obtained at the Tourist Office.

Anyone for tennis?
It's good to keep active, especially when you are in France, a country which tempts you constantly with superb food and drink! Le Croisic offers various sporting possibilities, with tennis (the town has no less than seven courts), a sailing club and access to excellent golf at nearby la Baule. Meanwhile the coastal paths around the town with their stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, are perfect for walkers and cyclists. Then of course, there is the ever present ocean for swimming, sea fishing and beach sports.

Croisic's aquarium
Croisic has an aquarium which is worth a visit. Here you can see all manner of ocean species, from all over the world, including penguins, sharks and rays.

Out and about
There is no shortage of places to see in the locality, so once you have explored the pretty little peninsula where Le Croisic is situated, you will probably want to begin with La Baule, reputed to have the longest and most beautiful beach in Europe. The city of Nantes is certainly worth a visit, as is the intriguing little island of Noirmoutier, with its famous bridge, causeway and salt marshes. Brittany lies just to the north and the Vendée to the south, so there is a great variety of places to discover.

How to get there
It's so easy to get to Le Croisic from the UK. Fly to Nantes or Rennes, both served by budget airlines. Rennes is served by flybe and Aer Lingus, while Nantes is served by easyJet, Ryanair and Aer Arran. If you prefer the train, you can take the TGV from Paris direct to the town, as it has its own TGV station. The A11 motorway from Paris towards Nantes is the one to follow if you are in a car, after which you can take the N171 from La Baule and the D45 to Le Croisic.

Property availability and prices in and around Le Croisic
Property on the coast is never cheap. Le Croisic is no exception, but there is the advantage of being able to rent out your property to holidaymakers if you don't wish to live in it full-time, as this is a very popular resort. It would be a good place to invest in a business property, as the tourist trade brings in a great income from establishments such as hotels and restaurants. Be ready to act swiftly if you do find your ideal property here, as Le Croisic is a desirable location and property doesn't stay on the market long.
