Mayenne, Mayenne, Mayenne
The town of Mayenne, which is located in the north-west of France, is interesting for a number of reasons, not least because it shares its name with its river and its department, and is unique within France for this! Mayenne is also notable for its castle, its strong dialect (which can make ordinary French seem easy to understand!) and for the excellent cider which is produced here and which is very much a local speciality.
|
Divided by the river
The town is divided into two distinct parts by the wide, calm waters of the River Mayenne. On the west side of the river lies the historical district, which is named Notre Dame after its basilica. The castle and most of the characterful parts of town are found here, but there is superb shopping to be had on the east side of the river too, so don't feel tempted not to bother exploring further. Even the river itself is a point of interest, as its old river port was of great strategic importance in times of war, and today it is possible to take an informative boat trip along the river to learn about the battles which have raged here over the years.
|
Historical interest
The town offers various points of historical interest, with a fully restored mediaeval castle and attached museum, the latter giving information in English as well as in French. The beautiful Notre Dame Basilica is well worth a little time for a visit, and there is a good deal of interesting architecture on this side of the river, as a walk around the town will swiftly establish. The part of town that lies on the east side of the river is known as St Martin, and here you will find more modern buildings as sadly much of the original architecture was destroyed during the bombing raids of the Second World War.
|
All amenities on hand
Being a good sized town with a thriving economy and a dynamic attitude, Mayenne has all the usual shops, supermarkets, educational and health services that you would expect, leaving you comfortably placed to access everything you want without having to head for the principal town of Laval. The shops range from intriguing little arts and crafts establishments to super modern hypermarkets, and Mayenne also boasts a number of excellent restaurants where you can sample the local cider as well as some impressive menus and wine lists.
|
Out and about
Getting out and about into the countryside that surrounds Mayenne brings its own pleasures, and the countryside, whilst not as dramatic as perhaps the coastline of Brittany, or the mountains of the Alps, is soft, pretty and relaxing. There are many sporting activities in which you can indulge, including horse-riding (the Mayenne is known as perfect riding country), boating on the river, walking, cycling and many more. Mayenne has various sports clubs and facilities for swimming, tennis and football, to name but a few.
|
How to get there
The nearest airports to Mayenne are Rennes, Dinard and Angers. Rennes is served by flybe and Aer Lingus; Dinard by Aurigny and Ryanair; and Angers by Eastern Airways. The ferry is also a viable option, with the nearest ports being those of St Malo, Caen and Le Havre. Drivers will find the town from the N12.
