What to see and do in Segré

Segré is not a huge town, but it has a good variety of places to see and things to do. The sites of historic and scenic interest include the churches and the ancient stone bridge, the town hall and the floral parks and gardens which are quite stunning in summer. La Madeleine is probably the best loved of the churches, and is a neo-Byzantine edifice whose gardens are not only beautiful but also offer magnificent panoramic views of the town below.

The town is famed for its excellent archaeological museum, and Segré also boasts both a cultural centre and a theatre, so you won't have to make the trip to Angers to satisfy your cultural thirst unless you want to!

For those of you with energy to spare, Segré has excellent sporting facilities. There is a new indoor swimming pool to allow for all season swimming, and also an outdoor pool for those long hot sunny summer days. Equestrians can access a very highly regarded horse-riding centre, and not far from the town there is golf, fishing, a race course and a river marina for boating. If you are looking to investigate the area around Segré, you could do worse than make a day trip to Angers, which is a lovely city with a delightful café culture. Driving around in the countryside here is also delightful, with the Bocage patchwork fields and rivers creating one of France's prettiest landscapes.

How to get there

The nearest airports to Segré are those of Rennes and Nantes, which offer a choice of direct flights from the UK and Ireland. Nantes is served by GB Airways, Ryanair and Aer Arran while Rennes is served by flybe and Aer Lingus. Train travel is another excellent option, as the TGV runs from Paris or Lille to Angers. If you are driving, the A11 auto route from Paris will take you close to Segré.

Interesting fact: The town was originally called Secretum, meaning secret or isolated.
