Challans - a thriving community
Challans lies in the west of France, a short way inland from the Atlantic coast and the salt producing island of Noirmoutier. Challans is a thriving community with a booming economy. It holds a great appeal for tourists too, due to its privileged geographical position near the beaches of the Vendée and the tranquil waterways of the Marais Breton.
|
Challans's poultry and markets
Challans is the second largest town of the Vendée department. Important in several respects, it is best known for its poultry and eggs (le canard de Challans or the “Challans Duck” being very well known), and its old time markets which are held throughout the months of July and August. These bring in a large amount of tourists to boost the town's economy.
|
Historical yet modern
There are plenty of historic sites in the town too, with the lovely Church of Notre Dame, the Abbaye de Coudrie and the Château de la Vèrie to see, amongst others. With all its history, however, the town doesn't rest on its laurels and just dwell on times past. There is a sophisticated modern side to Challans too, and the town offers all mod cons with excellent health facilities, shopping, leisure and educational establishments.

How to spend your time in Challans
Challans offers a huge variety of pleasant ways to spend your time… and even your money should you have some to spare! Challans is known for its excellent craftsmen, and has some fascinating little shops where you can see the exquisite wooden carvings made by local experts, and perhaps treat yourself or your friends to a unique piece or two. And if you are feeling peckish after shopping and visiting Challons's markets and historical sites, the town has a great selection of restaurants for you to try... the seafood is highly recommended!

Out and about
If you want to get a little fresh air, why not head to the beautiful nearby island of Noirmoutier where the sea salt industry unfolds before you, and where the salt air will bring colour to your face? The canals of the Marais Breton offer an opportunity to take a relaxing boat ride and discover the flora and fauna of the area in a gentle, time honoured fashion. Those who like to get involved in the action can take part in a variety of sports, including tennis, golf and even hot air ballooning.
|
How to get there
You can fly to either Nantes or Rennes. Nantes is served by GB Airways, Ryanair and Aer Arann, while Rennes is served by flybe and Aer Lingus. If you prefer the train, you can take the Eurostar to Paris and then a TGV to Nantes or Poitiers followed by a local train to Challans.
