For buying and selling property in L'Hermenault
L'Hermenault is a pretty, rural village with just 850 inhabitants, but it is close enough to the Vendée's many fabulous attractions to make it an ideal base for anyone wanting to spend time in the delightful part of western France. With the beaches and lively resort towns of the Atlantic coast just a short drive away, and further attractions such as Poitiers and the theme park of Futuroscope also within easy reach, there is no shortage of things to do and places to go.
For a small village, L'Hermenault is quite well served with amenities. There is a public school and a private school, a post office, swimming pool and various shops and services including a hairdresser's, bakery, tobacconist's and coffee shop, mini market and even a pizza van that arrives every Friday evening for your Friday take away! Heritage wise, L'Hermenault is no slacker either. Proud of its history, the village has a stunning castle, mediaeval lavoirs, a wooden Calvary cross and a church whose earliest parts were constructed in the 11th century. Many other traditional and original buildings can be found around the village.
The village is surrounded by beautiful countryside to enjoy, with sunflower fields, rivers, lakes and pine forests making up a diverse and attractive landscape. If you are looking for outdoor activities, you can find horse-riding stables, golf, wonderful walking and cycling trails, swimming lakes and boating on lakes and rivers. Fishing too is a popular pastime, but be sure to check out what permits you need with the Mairie or the tabac.
Going further afield it can be difficult to decide what to do… too much choice! You can spend long, lazy summer days at the seaside, enjoying the well developed facilities of resort towns such as Les Sables d'Olonne, or visiting the vibrant port city of La Rochelle. Inland, the Vendée also has much to offer. A near neighbour of L'Hermenault is the gorgeous town of Fontenay le Comte, bursting with history and heritage, or head for the city of Poitiers and spend a day at the fabulous educational theme park of Futuroscope.
Getting to the area from the UK offers a number of choices. Air travellers can choose from arrival airports of La Rochelle, Poitiers or Nantes, all with direct flights from the UK. Ryanair, Flybe, Jet2 and easyJet fly to La Rochelle; Air France, easyJet and Ryanair fly to Nantes; and Ryanair flies to Poitiers. Rail travel is also possible, with the same three cities having TGV stops. Finally, those travelling in their own cars can find the village from the A83 auto route, near the D148, along the D104/D30. St Malo would be the best ferry port to use.
While property in the coastal Vendée can be pricey, inland villages such as L'Hermenault frequently offer the opportunity to snap up a bargain. On the market at the time of writing (2011) is a fully renovated charming cottage for not much more than 100,000 Euros, and plenty of other, larger properties for very little more.
