The town of La Caillère St Hilaire is either a small town or a large village (depending on your point of view) that lies in the popular holiday department of the Vendée in the Pays de la Loire region of western France. Whichever classification you decide to give La Caillère, it is a very appealing town which is well located for access to all the favourite attractions of the region. La Caillère St Hilaire sits a short way inland from the holiday resorts of the coast, but its beautiful bocage countryside has every bit as much appeal, and anyone hoping to run tourist related businesses could benefit from the popularity and lower prices of this town.
In respect of its amenities, it is probably more apt to call La Caillère St Hilaire a small town rather than a village, as there are shops and even a restaurant to hand as well as many useful services. You will find a supermarket for convenience shopping, a boulangerie to provide you with all the delicious breads and pastries that help to make French food so famous, a poissonerie (though this only opens at weekends), a pharmacy, banks and cash points, petrol station and a bar tabac. Add to this a pizzeria and a restaurant and you will see that despite its friendly village atmosphere, La Caillère is as well equipped as any much larger town!
The sports and leisure facilities in and near the town are excellent, and provide something to keep all ages and levels of fitness happy. La Caillère has a football pitch and a skate park, and nearby there are facilities for golf, horse-riding, tennis, boules and many more activities.
The town lies in an area of the Vendée which is known as the Bocage, a land that undulates gently with hills, woods and lakes, many of which offer facilities for swimming, fishing and sailing. For something really different, the spectacular light and sound shows at Puy de Fou are easily accessed, but do remember to pre-book places as the shows are extremely popular and can be booked up well in advance. Even though La Caillère St Hilaire is an inland town, the sea and its lovely beaches and islands is not far away, so take advantage of this and visit the busy harbour of La Rochelle, or the beautiful island of Ile de Ré.
Fortunately, La Caillère St Hilaire is within easy reach of several airports which offer direct flights to and from the UK. Make for La Rochelle, with flights with budget airlines Ryanair, flybe and easyJet, or fly to Poitiers with Ryanair. Nantes is also within reach, and has flights with Ryanair and Aer Arann. Poitiers is a town which has a TGV stop too, so it is ideal if you enjoy travelling on these excellent fast trains. Drivers should take the A83 followed by the D88, from where they can access the town.
In general, property in the Vendée can tend to be pricey as the area is justifiably popular, having become increasingly sought after in recent years. Inland towns such as La Caillère St Hilaire, however, can offer more property bargains, so if this is important this could be a good place to begin your search.
