La Faute sur Mer - Vendéen style
The Vendée has a style all of its own, and everyone who loves this sunny part of coastal France will recognise this style immediately in the little resort town of La Faute sur Mer. Located beside the sea, with fine sandy beaches and all mod cons, La Faute consists of pretty white "sugar cube" cottages and houses that line its quiet streets and sparkle in the sun.
The food of love
La Faute is known as a major producer of oysters, and these are very much a local speciality, so they feature heavily on the menus in the restaurants and are on sale in the local shops and markets. There are many oyster beds in the seas around the town, and it is fascinating to discover all about oyster farming by watching it unfold in front of your eyes before enjoying the final product!
Seasonal changes
The streets are indeed quiet in winter, but come the summer the town fills up with happy holidaymakers, many of whom are second home owners. La Faute tends to attract mostly French, although the Brits who have been fortunate enough to discover the resort have fallen head over heels in love. In fact, they seem to feel that part of the charm of La Faute is that it hasn't been over "Anglicised".
Fresh air and fun
The lively summer months in La Faute can easily be filled to the brim with sporting, leisure and cultural activities. The sea and the beaches offer all kinds of sports, with kite surfing being among the more unusual. Of course, there are facilities for swimming, walking, tennis, horse-riding, golf and many more sports in the area.
More leisurely pursuits
On the leisure side, La Faute has a casino, cafés, bars, discos and restaurants, so there is no excuse for lying around all day... unless, of course, the idea of simply relaxing in the sunshine (La Faute lies in an area that enjoys a micro climate that makes it one of the sunniest in France) is just too tempting!
Shops and other services
La Faute is well equipped with shops (including a Super U supermarket) and has all the usual services, so you won't have any problems getting everyday necessities such as groceries. The large town of La Rochelle is not too far away should you wish to have access to more facilities. In the summer months La Faute has street markets held twice a week, on Thursdays and Sunday mornings.
Out and about
La Faute is very close to the beautiful Il de Ré, and a trip to this island of artists is a great experience. La Rochelle is buzzing and colourful at any time of year, indeed all of the Vendéen resorts are fabulous and fun, should you wish to explore a little further afield.
How to get there
Both Nantes airport and that of La Rochelle are within reach, so flying to the region is easy. Nantes is served by Ryanair and Aer Arann while La Rochelle is served by Ryanair, flybe and easyJet. Should you prefer to travel by rail, the nearby towns of La Roche sur Yon and Les Sables d'Oloron both have railway stations, so the train is a good alternative. Drivers can find the town on the D46 coast road. The nearest major roads are the A83, A87 and N11.
